It’s international test your backups day! Go test your backups, don’t just check they exist. Do they restore? Is the RPO expected? Do they reintegrate? Is data integrity preserved? HA is not BCDR. You’ve been warned.

  • “Didn’t you say this a couple of months back?” Yeah. It’s never a bad day to test your backups. Well, almost never. When you actually need them might not be optimal. That’s my point.

@SecurityWriter how to test backup without sufficient space on the drive to restore without first deleting production data?

@SecurityWriter Be a friend and delete prod so your backup team can finally test properly.

@SecurityWriter Hmm, I think HA is High Availability, but RPO? BCDR? 🤔

  • @SecurityWriter Last time I did some backup restoration, RPO was *not* in the acceptable range xD But I recovered all data. (Full PostgreSQL database restoration on my self-hosted server, took ~6 full days)

  • @SecurityWriter Sadly even though I agree with and preach about restore testing I didn’t follow my own advice properly. I’ve found plenty of issues recovering my own laptop this week. Got there in the end, but harder than it needed to be and failed layers. Lessons learned and more testing require! And a stern conversation with myself!
