My +1 asked yesterday why I don't talk a lot about quantum computing breaking encryption and I said because it doesn't create many truly novel policy issues.
e.g. we've told govts, police, etc. to minimise data collection forever, as having less vulnerable data to be decrypted in the future lowers exposure, but govts just never wanted to hear it.
But I've been thinking about it since then, and realised quantum decryption may break the internet in realtime, because it can break 1/2

the encryption that e.g. underlies routing security at multiple protocol layers from secure routing announcements to UDP to TLS and to the whole assurance and certification regime underlying SSL. But honestly this is just a wild guess. Who, that actually knows about (potential widespread future) quantum decryption, is thinking about how it might impact internet infrastrucrure, especially routing? Would be curious and grateful to know more (and where/if I'm wrong). 2/2
