my take is that social media/online spaces is like a cave. we make sense of caves by using the language of houses. we project the ideas of "walls" and "ceilings" and "floors" onto the interiors of the cave. but we do this at our peril because caves were *not* designed. they're basically room mimics. a cave wasn't made to be hospitable to human life, it merely exists and we explore it because we're curious. I fear we're doing a similar thing when we call online peer-to-peer messaging programs "chatrooms." we're projecting the idea of a "room" onto a virtual space. but that kinda obscures the ways in which this "room" differs from an actual room in ways that would be difficult, impossible, or extremely uncomfortable to replicate in real life
