I'm getting into my own bicycle repair. I'll start with my daughter's, whose cranks are sticking. I'm planning on trying to get into the bottom bracket today to check the bearings. This video is fantastically helpful:

@brianb a cool thing about (most) bikes is that every part of them can be serviced or exchanged by a home mechanic with minimal special tools. Good luck on your bike mechanic journey.
