We went for an afternoon walk and there were exciting birds!
First we heard a hawk calling. I got out the monocular and we saw a red-shouldered hawk sitting in a tree, its reddish front almost glowing in the sun.
A bit later there was a ruckus, and a bird landed in the tree in front of us. It was a pileated woodpecker! Another one was calling in the distance. We got to watch it pecking at a dead branch.

We walked for a while longer and turned around. We saw one of the pileated woodpeckers again, looking for bugs in a dead tree. Then we were almost home and I glanced to my left and saw a red-shouldered hawk sitting on a street sign about ten feet away! It flitted to a stop sign that was just a little bit further and sat there for a while. 2/2
