@eris@yourwalls.today It could - ninty got the hardware implementation done, but decided to not implement it in software on realizing the licensing costs. Old Wii DVD drives can be put in DVD mode to read pressed DVD's or DVD-R's for DVD playback after all - although newer drives have that mode removed.
