Staff are getting more and more frustrated with the number of patrons coming into the library asking for something that Gemini or ChatGPT or whatthehellever told them about that doesn't actually exist, or is less than accurate. These companies have done a great job of getting people to trust these things, and it's creating so many problems. I'll say it again, and a bit louder for the people in the back: DO NOT TRUST AI. 1/3 #AI #Library #Libraries #ChatGPT #Gemini

@deadtom@dice.camp I will give you a calculator for free, but it's only right 90% of the time. So, just to be helpful, I'll give you another one so you can crosscheck the calculation. So 10% / 2 = only 5% wrong, ok? Just in case, I'll give you a third one, and maybe a fourth. Oh but maybe the math on this crosschecking isn't exactly right... but anyways.... as long as those calculators are free I guess some folks will use them. And once they depend on them then they will stop being free. Just do the calculation by hand! It will be faster than all that crosschecking and also be 100% right...

I just had a patron come in wanting to print a screenshot from their phone, of a conversation they had with Gemini regarding ADA regulations. They wanted to present the screenshot at the next council meeting to persuade them to make some change to their building. It took a few minutes of going back and forth with the guy to convince him to go talk to a librarian, so they could help him find the actual regulation, rather than trusting what the AI is telling him. 2/3
