people at work are considering buying a few raspberrypi BUT i know they behaved very badly not long ago.
what are the alternatives?

@wadus Depends what you're getting them for. If it's anything to do with being a server, which I'm assuming it is, get some cheap x86 boxes like NUCs instead, they're going to perform a couple million times better. If it's for the GPIO, then Beagleboards.
