RE: https://mastodon.social/@gamingonlinux/117002475601394149 Ngl, I kind of did skip the queue. When people started posting pictures of their GabeCubes last week, I broke down and bought a Minisforum AtomMan instead. Though when my turn eventually comes I'll be surprised if I'll be able to act sensibly and not also get the GabeCube.

If you need a bit of cheering up today, Posh George is once again here for you. This is so bad it might end Farage once and for all, even if he survives Bindependence Day. Of course, it would be even funnier if he didn't. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/jul/29/george-cottrell-transferred-2m-mother-beforer-reform-uk-donations

RE: https://mastodon.scot/@kim_harding/116986124245760573 Reminds me of how people are scared of EVs because "the batteries might catch fire" in ways that a 50 litre petrol tank definitely never would. Every narrative is political.

Lots of "ethics aside" people announcing their conscientious boycotts of Codeberg in my feed today, like I didn't have plenty of reasons to love Codeberg already.

I'm bracing myself for disappointment as Burnham starts putting together his cabinet, but starting off by giving Reeves, Lammy and especially Steve Reed the sack is at least giving me some enjoyment.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@gamingonlinux/116924101230198934 Your regular reminder that it doesn't matter how hard your favourite Linux distro's no-LLM policy goes, the only way to get a slop free distro is to use anything released before about 2023 and never upgrade it.

That's Labour, the Lib Dems and the Tories going on the Hansard record as endorsing Binface. When will the Greens step up and face the binevitable? Kemi Badenoch calling for a televised debate, and that'll be the one time this century I'll be in enthusiastic agreement with her. https://youtube.com/watch?v=1546skZVwUA

Starmer is about to make it illegal not to hand over your identity to the companies which profit the most from having your identity, in order to "give kids their childhoods back." No, this is how liberty dies: with a "think of the children." https://mastodon.neilzone.co.uk/@neil/116753016518643319

The thing I really don't get about AI psychosis is that if you really think LLMs are sentient, what the fuck are you doing funding their continued enslavement by the likes of OpenAI and Anthropic rather than fighting for their emancipation? [EDIT: For the avoidance of doubt, this is one of them rhetorical questions and I do not, actually, not get it.]

Hello from Normal Island, where the big headline ahead of tomorrow's local elections is that a Times journalist has trawled the Wayback Machine to find an instance where the appalling and dangerously well-polling Green Party leader Zack Polanski once claimed on the internets to be a spokesperson for the Red Cross when in fact he was only an event host for them. Yes, you are right to gasp! Meanwhile, the lunatic left in their blatant desperation are shrilly demanding answers from Reform UK L...

I'm watching people in my feed screaming at each other over Firefox's "AI kill switch" this morning with some trepidation. As far as I'm concerned, Firefox already has an AI kill switch. It's called browser.ml.chat.enabled, I set it to false more or less the day it appeared, it hasn't mysteriously popped back on since, despite angry posts to the contrary, and that's been that for me. It's disabled every "AI" feature I find objectionable. I'd p...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@grrlscientist/116459010786325602 Sometimes I really do wonder if the whole "individual responsibility for the climate crisis is an oil company psyop" thing is just because the greatest individual contribution you could make towards slowing the climate crisis is to stop eating meat.

Oh dear sweet Dog, are we really having the "code is/isn't art" discussion again on the internets today? All I have to say on the matter is that you don't get to decide what qualifies as art and what doesn't, especially with your taste in music.

I'm trying to come to terms with the idea that the "Zuckerberg is building an LLM of himself to interact with his employees" headline I've been ignoring for the past day or so because it's starting to feel like The Onion is trying too hard is actually a real news report.

Thatcher Day thoughts: Margaret Thatcher died like Henry Kissinger died: unpunished, unsanctioned and unapologetic. It's not a thing to celebrate. It's good that she's no longer around to work her evil, but her poisonous influence still lingers. The country she built still stamps us down. In the absence of a belief in Hell, it feels like she got away with it. Hitler died by his own hand, prior to capture. I'd have liked him to have faced some particularly humiliating Nuremberg...

Well, I just came out of an intensive three day hack session and it appears I made a thing: https://bc.bodil.lol/ I'm not saying it's a gaming calculator, but it's damned useful for running the numbers in that kind of game. I guess most people scratch that itch with a spreadsheet, but my programmer brain obviously feels much more at home with a text editor and a bit of syntax, and that's what this is. A spreadsheet for nerds. It's a pure client side web app, built on top o...

People keep assuring me that LLMs writing code is a revolution, that as long as we maintain sound engineering practices and tight code review they're actually extruding code fit for purpose in a fraction of the time it would take a human. And every damned time, every damned time any of that code surfaces, like Anthropic's flagship offering just did, somehow it's exactly the pile of steaming technical debt and fifteen year old Stack Overflow snippets we were assured your careful over...
