I don't want to have to think about it either. I do think about my router's security because I know it matters, I need a home network that's a bit more complex that just telling my friends what the WiFi password is. When was the last time you saw a network-enabled device like a smart TV that included a disclosure about the need to install security updates? I've never seen one. Manufacturers know that if they make such disclosures, they will discourage a portion of their potential customer base. And I can't help but wonder whether they open themselves up to potential lawsuits if that disclosure is treated as an implied warranty as well. Making it possible to install security patches while not drawing attention to it gives them the legal protection of shifting the blame to customers who didn't install them.
