It's the second book in a trilogy. The trilogy is called The First Law ("The First Law of magic is to never directly touch the Other Side. Do not speak with the spirits."). This second book is called Before They are Hanged.
The guy reading is phenomenal. I listen and believe multiple people are speaking, as he reads. His voices are incredible.

I thought "wow, that sounds like a good book I should check it out" and discovered I bought the trilogy and read it years ago. I remember it being pretty good but little else about it.
