@doriane While I get the sentiment (I don’t use Instagram and my main platform is the fediverse), it’s worth remembering that Instagram hit 3 billions monthly active user recently. There is no massive exit of people from those platforms as far as regular users are concerned. I think all creative should be spreading their risk and ideally not leave their fate to an platform, but staying is often the most sane thing to do when you have actual rent and your family on the line 😕

@NIGHTEN agree! I'm really (really) aware how precarious material conditions forces those dependencies and i would never blame the people using mainstream social networks for work-career stuffs as nit has an important impact. I think it's also important to precise artist stuck on a platform are minority of people, statistically. Yet even with those two mechanism taken in account, it still feel very silly to notice that for most artists living in social network era, them being an artist add obstacle to social change instead of freeing you from a system. Which feels silly to me because it constrast with what some collective discourse often project on artists as possible embodiment of changes in practices. in this case their/our socio-economical positions are made possible through technological dependencies that actually add difficulties in going for change...

@doriane @NIGHTEN I would be curious to know how much they actually make through their Instagram self-advertising, how long it took them to getting enough visibility to actually make money from it, and how much commitment to the platform it requires of them. And then compare that to the experience of artists here in the Fediverse.
