The New York Times has aimed my least favorite recurring feature squarely at my own backyard, and it goes exactly how you'd expect: they talk up the "college town" feel of Central by the university, one of them is an urban planner, so naturally they decide to buy new-construction bleh on the West Mesa where their principal local amenities are car washes and self-storage.
To be fair they were under time constraints but, well, leave it to the NYTimes to come to Albuquerque and play up mediocrity.

@jbcrawford the entire Gilbert-Chandler area basically east to mesa and south to queen creek used to be (in the 90s, early 2ks) farms. This is a huge, huge area that now houses several hundred thousand people. What is it like? Well.. mediocre retail, houses and strictly car infrastructure. Definitely different from where you live but it’s also played up as “one of the safest cleanest” places in Arizona. Or as they say in the business, the whitest most mediocre place in AZ.
