Scientists brought bacteriophages (viruses that attack bacteria) to the ISS to see how they behave in micro-gravity. At first, they had a harder time attacking the bacteria, but improved over time due to mutations.
When brought back to earth, the "space viruses" were able to eliminate "terrestrial" E.-Coli bacteria that are usually very resistant to treatment. Promising. :)
Yet another case of unforeseeable benefits of funding space research.
