Interesting but still doesn't solve the problem that 50% of pedestrians want you to sound your bell, and the other 50% don't want it.

@baoigheallain Honest to god, I try to always lightly ding my bell from a distance when on a shared path coming up behind people, just so people aren't surprised by me cycling slowly by, and you'd swear some of them have heard gunshots. #Rothar #BikeTooter

@baoigheallain And it's enormous. I've got two different bell models on my two usual bikes. Both are designed to give a single pleasant ping that goes on for a long time. Regardless of how polite I am, I still get shouted at by pedestrians when eventually I say, "Excuse me," even when they're in the road. I get that there aren't any pavements round here, but learn to share!
