IT IS HAPPENING! Today, Signal launches phone number privacy & usernames! These features let you use Signal w/o sharing your phone number with the people you talk to Proud to add more privacy to Signal, & proud of the smart, careful work the team did to make this happen ♥️ You can read more here: https://signal.org/blog/phone-number-privacy-usernames/

Also, note: You can sign up for beta to test these features. Note that Apple caps the number of iOS beta testers, and we have reached that limit. If you use Signal on iOS, you can get around this by signing up for Desktop beta, linked to your iOS account. More info: https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/360007318471-Signal-Beta

@Mer__edith@mastodon.world it would be great if one could use two accounts one single app. Mixing private and public is often a hassle. Some want to see the full name, but in private usage I only want to use the first name. Is ther any way this could be addressed without having to have two phones?

@Mer__edith@mastodon.world Do you still require hard verification of the MSISDN or can one finally use signal without having to link the account to an xkeyscore strong selector? (just kidding… you‘d never do that, lol)

@Mer__edith@mastodon.world Thanks much for Team Signal's work on these features. I've held back using this app and service, limiting it to closest family and friends because my number was exposed. Now I will feel better about using it more widely.

@Mer__edith@mastodon.world "you will still need a phone number to sign up for Signal" - Why though? We have this new thing called the Internet. There's no reason to depend on telephone companies anymore.

@Mer__edith@mastodon.world I have read the article, and the KBs, and taken in totality it sure sounds like the network will still send/make accessible the phone # to the receiving client and rely on the client not to display it, effectively a "caller id privacy flag" which has to be honoured in client - have I missed something? Is there a planned protocol change later once everyone has upgraded that will prevent the number being accessible to receiving clients that has not been talked about?

@Mer__edith@mastodon.world no, it doesn’t “launch today”. This is still in effectively closed beta, I can’t even request access because it’s only on TestFlight for macOS/iOS users.

  • @Mer__edith@mastodon.world sorry... but neither a centralised service, let alone one that is controlled and managed by a company, could I trust. cc: @Lats@aus.social
