A lesson they've presumably learned from Microsoft's conversion of tens of millions of perfectly functional laptops into landfill last year (and *yes*, I *know*, you could install Linux instead, and that's precisely what I've done with our laptop in that category, but let's get real about what happened to most of those laptops)

@considermycat they silently bricked the hand-me-down top-of-the-line-but-old Kindle I got from my partner years ago. How? They changed the server end to no longer support the login method. Like, seriously?! And this only got brought to light after the third or so support person I interacted with. That was the day I decided that I would never use an Amazon device again.
