FWIW, the Hawkeye tv series came up in this thread and I honestly couldn't remember if I'd seen it or not. I had, which I discovered when I went back and watched it, and it's honestly pretty good on its own and basically adapts the later Kate Bishop-focused miniseries post-Bendis megareboot of everything Avengers, but even so, the character Renner plays is the soft-spoken world-weary agent we knew him to be from the movies, which you'd expect cuz this is just MCU-for-tv. That said, while it is a fun outing and puts some respect on the character and his underplayed skillz, it doesn't actually dig into the cooler earthier prole lore of the character that I was bemoaning up top. So A) doesn't really address my fanboy kvetching BUT B) still kind of honors SOME essence of what fanboys love about the character whilst also being a good ride.

So since this rumination re the favorite comic book of my childhood - which I used my OWN lawn-mowing money to subscribe to because you could not trust the three drug stores in Tipton, IA, to have any kind of decent, consistent comic book distribution - I went back to hit up some the Bendis mega-arcs I'd missed and there, in the interstitial moments, I found . . . Hawkeye and Jessica Drew/Spider-woman HOOKED UP. Just for a brief time - cuz nobody stays happy in this world, duh - but it was one of the cutest fucking things I have ever seen in comics and I use "cutest" basically like never, much less with a positive connotation.
