Unfortunately, practically speaking today if you don't have both email and a phone number, you can't participate in much of society; they are the de-facto standard for business comms and mfa, despite being entirely inadequate.
But - I can't remember the last time I received or sent a "recreational" email or phone call. They've been entirely supplanted by better options.

@tbortels@infosec.exchange call my mom at least a couple times a week while I'm out walking; she's my primary partner in conversations about sociology, theology, politics, etc. otherwise, yeah ... not many recreational phone calls.
