  • — ‘Andy Burnham is to double spending on ending rough sleeping to almost £900m by the end of the current parliament, as he steps up efforts to get people off the streets by Christmas. The prime minister has pledged to offer every rough sleeper in England a safe route off the streets or wider support as a central part of his premiership. As he prepared for a Downing Street summit on ending rough sleeping on Monday, Burnham said the budget would bring a further £432m commitment to helping to tac...

  • Where have these people been?! — ‘The fallout stems from the White House quickly posting video and photos of the prayer on social media, captioned as Catholic archbishops and bishops praying with the US president, less than two weeks before the midterm elections on 3 November. Archbishop Grob issued a statement headlined A Public Apology, in which he said he felt “a heavy sadness” over the pain the images had caused, and that he had heard from people alarmed that he had unwittingly joined a po...

  • A sociopath desperate to stay in power (and out of prison). — Netanyahu ‘posted an AI-generated image of a nuclear mushroom cloud destroying Tel Aviv, telling Israeli voters to choose him or risk nuclear annihilation. … Israel’s Channel 12 news reported that the prime minister and the armed forces chief of staff, Lt Gen Eyal Zamir, clashed in recent days over a directive to the military which could “potentially spark an immediate conflagration with Iran at a very sensitive juncture”, by provoki...

  • — ‘Officially the bank bailout cost the public £23bn, after some asset sales. But that’s trivial compared with the colossal lasting damage right across the economy. Official estimates cite a loss of up to 7.5% of GDP; others suggest double that amount. Bankers hiss at any hint of plucking a few feathers off them, but we wait to know how much John Healey dares take. Dimon visited No 10 last month to warn them off a tax raise, but Burnham only “dropped into the meeting briefly”. So, how much? Re...

  • I’ve been hoping that the stick Labour gets for approving Jackdaw – which already has a licence and can readily supply gas we’d import otherwise – will mean Rosebank doesn’t get the go-ahead. — ‘Doug Parr, chief scientist at Greenpeace, said: “The Burnham government is facing a series of big decisions over the next few months that could define its legacy on climate. This administration seems to get the urgency of cutting the emissions causing deadly heatwaves and droughts, but there’s a real ri...

  • Capturing at source to store within empty gas fields is promising, at least. But £24bn on this is just gross. The polluters should pay for their own cleanup / capture of pollutants. — ‘Campaigners are calling on the chancellor to cut the government’s £24bn spending plans for “fairytale” carbon capture technologies in favour of funding green schemes that can reliably cut emissions and lower energy bills. The environmentalist Chris Packham is leading an 11th-hour appeal for the Treasury to use...

  • — ‘The news network CNN Brasil reported that Bolsonaro had fled to the US with his wife and two daughters in the early hours of this morning. Bolsonaro had not been seen since Monday and missed a Tuesday-morning deadline to hand his passport to the federal police, fuelling rumours that he may have fled Brazil after losing on Sunday. … Bolsonaro was told to surrender his passport over a criminal case in which the federal police are investigating him for possible involvement in a money-laundering...

  • Yesterday in Porto, I had booked a private guided bike tour of the coastline from the port to the mouth of the Douro river. Somehow, I didn't fully grasp what "private" meant. I was expecting to be part of a group. Instead, I had my own personal guide for 2.5 hours, which was pretty cool. I saw more than I would have if I had just rented a bike, with history and context to go along with it. The only downside was the weather. It started raining off and on about a half h...

  • While I was engrossed in my audio book, this guy parked himself a couple of feet away from me to share my patch of shade. Not sure when he showed up, but he hung out there for at least a half hour after I noticed.

  • I was lucky enough to see today's total eclipse from just off the coast of northern Spain. What an incredible experience. Pictures don't do it justice. It was cloudier than I would have hoped, but still spectacular. The video is double speed. Apologies for the chaotic framing. I don't use that gimbal enough to remember how all the controls work.

  • The Heathrow departures board is weird. Fllight begins boarding at 17:20. "We'll tell you your gate at 17:15." "Also, it'll take 20 minutes to walk there from here."

  • Long travel days are long. Woke up at 6:45am in the UK. Got home in Los Angeles at 11:00pm, a little over 24 hours later, and 90 minutes after that, I'm still awake. Ugh.

  • Peter Gabriel wasn't in the books. #Silo

  • "LLMs are clearly problematic for a bunch of uses, but it's so good at coding so using them for that is great." 🤦

  • Snuck out of work to see Wildwood because my local AMCs only have larger format screenings before 2pm. Too many other movies released this week I guess.

  • Gross. Glad I went a different direction when I moved my primary email away from Google and the end last year. RE: https://mastodon.social/@404mediaco/117509377339919227

  • In a world where LLMs are widely used, attribution of where something came from is harder to get. There's multiple examples of people doing things like uploading videos and saying "I don't own this, it was made by so-and-so", as if that legally protected them. My understanding is that it never did.

  • I feel like traditional ML was focused on things we didn't know how to do, like optimizing things represented by complex vector spaces, and things which were important, but hard to do at the desired scale, like cancer diagnosis. But it seems like modern "AI"is focused on replacing things we know quite well how to do with prompting LLMs or other models, and also using those models to do things that aren't clearly worth doing in the first place.

  • Looking at a job ad that literally says "You've stopped waiting for AI to mature and are already building with it, not as a productivity trick, but as a core part of how you think about problems." Maybe they think they are saying something like "We want someone who has regularly uses AI as a tool" but to me it comes off as "We want someone who has replaced part of their brain with API calls." No thanks.

  • A lot of my posts have been anti-LLM, and I still hold that position. But, I find myself wondering if I had transplanted some of my feelings about an apparent increase in the amount of speech that is disconnected from reality, appearing in media in general, that started before ChatGPT appeared. Part of me wonders whether I just got better at seeing that disconnectedness, and another part wonders to what extent precursors to LLMs contributed to the volume of that speech.
