If you've got time left on your Disney+ subscription and haven't watched Andor yet, I heartily recommend it. It's really Ironic that one of the first media company to fold to the threats from the government also made a really excellent show on the rise of Authoritarianism and what people can do to resist. For those who don't like sci fi shows... Try it. It's the least Space Opera of the entire Star Wars franchise.

One of the fundamental issues with web development is that people who make websites care very much about things being very precisely placed exactly where they want, imagining websites like printed work; a newspaper or a flyer, or even a piece of artwork. The thing is, web languages were developed from the very beginning without that as a design goal. They explicitly omitted precise layout *as a feature*. The results have been, naturally, a technical and architectural train wreck.

The real civilizational threats we face are the insatiable greed of billionaires and the endless growth demanded by the markets we have created, not language models becoming superintelligent, which is at best a fantasy and at worst an article of faith of a deranged silicon valley cult.
