  • RE: https://mastodon.social/@itsfoss/117360683828413922 There's anti-chinese sentiment in here but other than that its a good article. I'm still not convinced the majority of anti-chinese sentiment online isn't just McCarthyism red scare propaganda.

  • I am at the point where I don't trust at first glance any new web source to provide quality human created content (or at least human supervised). And I'm probably wrong because many of my usual sources plausibly use AI a lot now... #AI #aifail #fakenews

  • It's very strange that projects forks on #Github only show up when you're logged in. #devops #devtools #development #developers

  • #passwordless logins are so painful. Switch to e-mail box. Wait for message to arrive. Sometimes even too late, have to request another. Password managers not able to identify that it's a logon screen, need to copy-paste the unique address manually, ... In the end it goes both against user experience and security best practices. Really disappointed to see major AI actors using this like #anthropic, despite they are providing products for security aware developers and power users.

  • I see many tutorials for local development recommending #tailscale to set up a #VPN infrastructure. OK, this is the quick answer, but... If you have "a small, stable number of Linux servers" #wireguard is more efficient (and still easy to setup) than tailscale, which is itself a layer above wireguard "if you want things to Just Work, you are administering a VPN for many different users, or if you want the extra features". https://tailscale.com/compare/wireg...

  • A warm welcome to all the people now following us over here on fedi! Fun fact: Did you know that both the #fediverse and #remoteStorage are based on user addresses and discovery via #WebFinger? If you're interested in the history, here's a video of @bmann interviewing @blaine about it: https://talk.fission.codes/t/webfinger-and-social-solutions-to-tech-problems-with-blaine-cook/555

  • remoteStorage.js 2.0.0.-beta5 was just released, including support for PKCE, refresh tokens, and permission scopes for Dropbox auth. https://github.com/remotestorage/remotestorage.js/releases/tag/v2.0.0-beta.5

  • A couple of remoteStorage core contributors are hanging out on Langkawi in Malaysia for https://hackerbeach.org this month. If you're in SE Asia and/or are interested in coming over, you're invited to join!

  • Learn about the background and conceptual ideas behind Notes Together, a #remoteStorage-enabled note-taking app that also supports lists: https://hominidsoftware.com/tech-personal-growth/notes-in-tasks-to-tasks-in-notes/ (If you already knew the app, did you know it can be used for to-do lists?)

  • Some RS contributors will be present at #hackerbeach again in January, this time on Madagascar: https://kosmos.social/@hackerbeach/111363700806398844

  • Our Mastodon instance admins added a custom #remoteStorage emoji/icon, which any other admins may copy to their instances as well: :remotestorage:

  • Our community forums are offline for a bit, while we're performing a larger upgrade of the Discourse software.

  • Sneak preview of the (unfinished) new remoteStorage website, with integrated and redesigned documentation for remoteStorage.js: https://rs-website-preview.5apps.com/ Details here: https://community.remotestorage.io/t/new-website-and-rs-js-documentation-site/850 @raucao would appreciate your feedback.

  • The webfinger.js codebase has been modernized and prepared for more improvements by @slvrbckt with his latest release: https://github.com/silverbucket/webfinger.js/releases/tag/v2.8.0 The next release will include a security fix for developers wanting to use it directly on servers (instead of in browsers).

  • remoteStorage.js 2.0.0-beta.10 released: https://github.com/remotestorage/remotestorage.js/releases/tag/v2.0.0-beta.10 All app authors are encouraged to upgrade to this latest release.

  • There is a new app for Nextcloud, which adds remoteStorage support to your instance, so you can use any RS-enabled app with it: https://github.com/jonocodes/nextcloud-remotestorage If you run a Nextcloud server, any and all testing and feedback would be much appreciated by the author!

  • Video file sizes: what do I need to know? I’m getting back into digital collecting after pretty much exhausting the local thriftstores of any movies I wanted to watch / own. I was thinking of burning everything to DVD but then I came to my senses and just installed Jellyfin. Question: What video file sizes do you guys download and why? And what is the correlation between video size and quality? I see some wild variations in file sizes even for the same res. Who are y’alls downlo...
