  • 3D software visualisation never failed for technical reasons. It fails for perceptual ones: occlusion, an arbitrary Z axis, dying labels – and depth is one of the weakest visual encodings we know (Cleveland & McGill, 1984). Thirty years of beautiful demos nobody uses twice. The bottleneck is the visual cortex, not the GPU. I still want to build one. I might. It'll be beautiful, and it'll fail: https://kore-nordmann.de/blog/why-3d-software-visualisation-keeps-failing.htm...

  • We assume the network is stable because day to day it works. It isn't: it fails, delays, delivers twice, delivers out of order. In-process, one compiler spans both sides of an interface and won't let the two ends drift. Move the call onto the network and you throw that arbiter away for drift, partial failure, and cross-process debugging. Pay that for a runtime reason, not to show two things are separate. https://kore-nordmann.de/blog/hexagonal_architecture_vs_microservices.html

  • “Our moral virtues benefit mainly other people; intellectual virtues, on the other hand, benefit primarily ourselves; therefore the former make us universally popular, the latter unpopular.” ~ Arthur Schopenhauer #quotes #philosophy #pessimism #quotesToLiveBy

  • @Axomamma Just because you don't like something does not mean it is evil.

  • @medley56@frontrange.co I feel the exact opposite. I see nonexistence as the greatest good. Why? Because even "good things" in this world are full of anxiety and suffering. See the philosophy of Julio Cabrera. I agree that morality, or ethics, are less convincing to me than they used to be. Mainly because humans do not have freewill. So how can they choose to refrain from having children? So how can ethics even work?

  • “The logic of pessimism moves through three refusals: a no-saying to the worst (refusal of the world-for-us, or Schopenhauer’s tears); a yes-saying to the worst (refusal of the world-in-itself, or Nietzsche’s laughter); and a no-saying to the for-us and the in-itself (a double refusal, or Cioran’s sleep).” “Crying, laughing, sleeping—what other responses are adequate to a life that is so indifferent?” ~Eugene Thacker, Cosmic Pessimism #sleep #pessimism #philosophy #quotes #quotesToLiveBy

  • “Haven't people learned yet that the time of superficial intellectual games is over, that agony is infinitely more important than syllogism, that a cry of despair is more revealing than the most subtle thought, and that tears always have deeper roots than smiles?” —Emil Cioran, On the Heights of Despair #pessimism #philosophicalPessimism #quotesToLiveBy #quotesDaily #philosophy #quotes

  • “From an evolutionary viewpoint, in Zapffe’s observation, consciousness was a blunder that required corrections for its effects. • “In a culture that prizes the can-do, self-starter attitude, to be a pessimist is simply to be a complainer – if you’re not part of the solution, then you’re part of the problem. To live in such a culture is to constantly live in the shadow of an obligatory optimism, a novel type of coercion that is pathologized early on in child education in the assessment: ‘Does not like to play with others.’” ~ Eugene Thacker, Tentacles Longer Than the Night #philosophy #quotes #philosophicalPessimism

  • “We do not rush toward death, we flee the catastrophe of birth, survivors struggling to forget it. Fear of death is merely the projection into the future of a fear which dates back to our first moment of life... the real evil, is behind, not ahead of us.” ~ Emil Cioran, The Trouble with Being Born #philosophy #philosophicalPessimism #quotesToLiveBy #quotes #EMCioran #AntiNatalism
