As we are awaiting the final, i thought, why not dig a little deeper in my feelings of the Round of 32. I felt that round was crazy unbalanced, and well, it was...
See the charts below. The first is a scatterplot of the different match ups, with the higher ranked (lower number) on the FIFA rankings on the Y-axis, and the lower ranked team on the X-axis. FIFA rankings are ... weird, but they are a good-enough metric.
The purple line shows "perfectly competitive" at any level. The distance of a plot from that purple line then shows how imbalanced the match up was.
The markers are in green. Only Germany - Paraguay is red, where the lower ranked team progressed. Everywhere else, the higher ranked team moved on.
The second chart plots the difference in ranking of the winners and losers; with Germany - Paraguay therefore in the negative.
This shows that the Netherlands - Morocco was "on paper" the most competitive... whereas Argentina - Cabo Verde was the least. (regardless of what actually happened in the game)
Imbalance is to be expected, when you have 1st and 3rd placed teams playing each other... but when a group winner finds itself in the most competitive game... something is messed up.
Have a great final, everyone 😊
