The #Biden Administration created 256,000 jobs in the final full month of his presidency (Dec). The most jobs created in one month during #DisasterDon's second term is 172,000 in January 2025 (the month Biden left office on the 20th.) 🤦‍♂️ #Jobs #Unemployment https://finance.yahoo.com/news/biden-goes-bang-jobs-market-000546537.html

The #Labor Dept said Thurs that the #unemployment rate declined to 4.2% from 4.3% in May, though the decline mostly occurred because many people out of work gave up looking & were no longer counted as unemployed. The figures suggest companies remain wary of the #economy’s health, with #inflation at a 3-year high & consumer confidence near post-pandemic lows. The #jobs gains initially reported in April & May were also revised lower. #CostOfLiving #affordability #trumpcession #recession #trump

As Pat McFadden (Labour's current Work & Pensions Secretary) is now saying, the emphasis on welfare reform - and the 'need' to reduce the welfare budget - is switching from sticks to carrots (my words not his), with support to get young people into jobs via subsides for employment & training. This is where a Labour party should have started not been forced to shift by political pressure, but other sticks remain, as does the callous attitude to benefits claimants. #workers #unemployment h/t FT

#FollowTheMoney 🧵42/n Firstly, I am conscious of my own #redundancy being very much part of the wider hollowing out, draining out of both public services and professional, creative industries everywhere (see many posts ⬆️). I am really scared about this - it’s strange how this is happening but not really talked about; no #unemployment crisis narrative at all, as of course most people, like me, end up not being “unemployed” but doing smaller, precarious jobs; very few of us on benefiso no stats

#FollowTheMoney 🧵 54/n This article is hard to stomach for all those of us currently looking for work, and not finding anything suitable, or anything at all. But it’s good that at least rising #unemployment is recognised now. My own #redundancy last year and subsequent struggles have made me so alert to all these wider structural changes; I am really scared that this may be just the beginning. Terrible combination of AI and money going only to the rich https://www.theguardian.com/money/2025/feb/10/britons-hunting-for-a-job-uk-jobseekers-pay?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

#FollowTheMoney 90/n 🧵 UK unemployment rate hits five-year high of 5.2% In a way i am glad that at least rising #unemployment is slowly recognised and talked about in MSM - those of us who have lost jobs know anecdotally just how widespread #Redundancy now is. worrying nonetheless. Not least because #underemployment- many working in PT low grade jobs to make ends meet - is not picked up at all statistically. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1l7pedyzjeo https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1l7pedyzjeo https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1l7pedyzjeo

#FollowTheMoney 🧵 91/n Youth #unemployment in particular is rising significantly in the UK. Now at 16.1%, higher than EU average for the first time. Alan Milburn: this poses an “existential” risk for the UK and could put “a generation on the scrapheap”. “This is not a short-term phenomenon, it’s a long-term one,” he told the BBC. “We’re seeing something dramatic changing in the labour markets.” https://www.theguardian.com/society/2026/feb/17/its-soul-crushing-young-people-battle-bleak-jobs-market-as-youth-unemployment-rises?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

RE: https://flipboard.com/@cbcnews/canada-1akomc2pz/-/a-iV98VnHOTuCOulvDJOoOQw%3Aa%3A107108217-%2F0 The #Conservative Party of #Canada published an #AI generated ad about #poverty and #recession, despite the AI industry being both one of the leading drivers of #unemployment and one of the leading drivers of #inflation and increasing costs of living. “The medium is the message,” as McLuhan wrote. The use of a poverty-generating technology to produce the ad reveals the real message: The CPC is pro-mass-layoffs, pro-cropland-displacement, pro-electricity-inflation, pro-drought, and pro-impoverishment. Their pretence of concern about working Canadians' economic conditions is a manipulative and exploitative lie. Their hypocrisy is ripe. The Liberals are conservative (hence #Carney enacting #neoliberalism), and the Conservatives are fascist. #cdnpoli #CPC #technicalRecession #CBC #NDP #GreenParty

PBS NewsHour - The Latest | Weekly U.S. jobless claims fall to 189,000, lowest in more than five decades by Matt Ott, Associated Press AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. In the week ending April 25, U.S. jobless‑benefit applications dropped by 26,000 to 189,000— the fewest new claims since September 1969 and the lowest level in more than five decades—defying analysts’ expectations of about 214,000. The Labor Department said the four‑week moving average fell to 207,500, while total weekly filers slipped to 1.79 million. Despite this positive signal, the labor market remains strained: core inflation surged, driven in part by higher gas prices as the Iran‑U.S. conflict pushes crude to around $104 a barrel; the Federal Reserve kept rates steady amid Middle‑East uncertainty, and employers added fewer than 200,000 jobs last year after a sharp slowdown following pandemic‑era expansions. Economists warn that elevated energy and material costs, together with AI‑driven hiring caution and lingering tariff impacts, could later revive layoffs even as the unemployment rate stays near historic lows.
