In Frederik Pohl's Gateway, he describes the "food mines". Growing fungi on organic-rich rocks to feed the masses. IRL, there are entire natural ecosystems that are organized around such a base. How many people do we need on a spaceship if we want an extrasolar colony to be viable (genetically)?
