@edgeofeurope@mastodon.social Rob, I’m not arguing for prudery, nor treating all nudity as pornography. Non-pornographic art, medical information, and education are obvious examples where nudity can be legitimate. I’m specifically arguing that Mastodon-branded generalist instances should not host pornography. I am also talking about preventing pornography from reaching people who did not deliberately opt into it by joining, following, or browsing adult-oriented servers and accounts. Hi guys! 🙂 I’m moving this conversation away from Burnout Café’s @admin@burnout.cafe account and over to my personal account. The admin account is meant mainly for administration, moderation, and service information. It was me who wrote the posts about #pornography, #moderation, #mastodon, and the #fediverse. I stand by my policy arguments, but I accept that one phrase was badly chosen. I should have referred to pornography generally, not homosexual pornography specifically. I am not saying that gay people or gay sexual content uniquely endanger anyone. That is not what I believe. My view is that Mastodon-branded generalist instances such as mastodon.social, mastodon.online and mastodon.world should not host pornography, regardless of orientation, and should do more to prevent unexpected exposure to pornographic material federated from elsewhere. Content warnings and hashtags frequently are not being used, notably when posts are federated from other instances where they don't apply the same rules as mastodon.social and mastodon.online. So pornography without any obfuscation can reach people - including minors - who did not knowingly opt into adult content. Pornography can be hosted on other servers in the Fediverse, but I don't believe it should be on servers that are operated by the Mastodon project, or that are likely to be perceived by newcomers as Mastodon-branded entry points. Burnout Café’s server rules show the kind of lower-shock, non-pornographic general space I am trying to maintain. I support LGBT+ people living openly, safely, and equally. My argument is about pornography policy on major Mastodon entry-point instances, not about opposing LGBT+ rights or expression. People are free to disagree with me. I am also free to argue for stricter moderation. I am happy to discuss the actual policy issues: consent, containment, age-safety, public timelines, federation, and the role of Mastodon-branded generalist instances. To the admins of mastodon.social and mastodon.world: I respectfully ask you to consider amending your Server Rules to prohibit the publication of pornography on your instances. Flagship Mastodon instances such as mastodon.social and mastodon.world are easily perceived by many newcomers as central, general-purpose entry points into Mastodon and the wider Fediverse. That gives those flagship sites a particular responsibility. Flagship general-purpose instances should not normalize unexpected exposure to pornography, regardless of orientation. Pornography is commonly considered by many people to be harmful, offensive or inappropriate in general-purpose public spaces. People who want to view, publish or discuss pornography can already do so on other instances that allow it, or on dedicated adult-focused instances where users knowingly choose that environment. Content warnings, sensitive-media blurring and hashtags are not sufficient containment for pornography on large general-purpose instances. In practice, many users who publish pornography do not reliably apply content warnings, sensitive-media settings or suitable hashtags, and other users who do not want to be exposed to that content can still encounter it unexpectedly. There is also a legal and regulatory issue. In Germany and the UK, for instance, legal adult pornography is not simply prohibited online, but making pornography publicly accessible to minors without effective age-gating or age assurance is heavily restricted and may be unlawful or legally non-compliant. Large public social-media instances should not rely on ordinary Mastodon content warnings or media blurring as if they were equivalent to age verification. For those reasons, I ask you to consider changing the server rules to prohibit pornography on mastodon.social and mastodon.world, rather than merely requiring it to be marked as sensitive. This would not be anti-sex, anti-LGBT, anti-expression or anti-Fediverse. It would simply recognize that large general-purpose onboarding instances have a different role from adult-focused communities. This is not acceptable content for a flagship Mastodon instance like mastodon.social This is not really what you want Big Media and The Government to think we really stand for. I love Free Software and the Fediverse. I spend not-inconsiderable time and money every month running Free public-service tools and websites. I also have a right to free speech. Those servers will better promote Mastodon and the rest of the Fediverse if they don't expose people to pornography, which many people would qualify as harmful, unhealthy or undesirable content. Mastodon is free software, and you're free to go set up your own server centered around whatever content or topics you like. But Mastodon's flagship servers should be safe for people of all ages (including children), including vulnerable and sensitive people. #mastodon #fediverse #pornography #moderation

That gives it a particular responsibility. A general-purpose public instance that carries the Mastodon brand up front in its domain name should not normalize exposure to pornography, regardless of orientation. My opinion is that content warnings, sensitive-media blurring, and hashtags are not sufficient containment for pornography on "flagship" instances like mastodon.social, mastodon.world, et cetera. Some content belongs behind warnings. Some belongs on specialist instances. Some should not be hosted at all. In the case of mastodon.social and other flagship instances, it shouldn't be hosted at all. I think that's a defensible viewpoint. If other people are considered to have the right to publish pornography, which they do continually, I have the right to publish my reservations and opinions about it. To those who accused me of homophobia, let me say this: My concern is not with gay people, Pride, or LGBTQ+ expression. If ever the government tries to outlaw you, I'll be out there in the streets to defend your rights. My concern is with pornography of any kind being posted on large general-purpose instances without strong containment. Sexual content should be clearly labelled, opt-in, and kept out of general public discovery. That should apply equally regardless of orientation. Adding the NSFW hashtag, a CW and blurring images is not a sufficient firewall. I support free expression, but free expression still needs sensible boundaries so public social spaces remain usable for people who do not want explicit sexual material in their feed. People who want to post or view legal pornographic content should go to or set up specialist instances. @staff@mastodon.social #mastodon #fediverse #pornography

@staff@mastodon.social A couple more posts about this subject, then I’m stepping back from the pile-on that ensued. 😄 burnout.cafe has intentionally strict rules around pornography, gore, harassment, hate speech, exploitation, and shocking content. That is because I want Burnout Café to be a calmer general-purpose space. Other instances will make different choices. That's part of the Fediverse. But it is legitimate for admins and users to discuss where adult sexual content belongs, how it should be labelled, and whether large general-purpose instances should surface it by default. #mastodon #pornography

I really am a supporter of free speech and free expression, but I *really* wish you would ban heterosexuals on your instance. Gay pride is about being gay. And it's especially a real pity because mastodon.social is a big instance and pretty central to the Mastodon corner of the Fediverse. I really do not want to block your whole instance. But it's a real nuisance trying to Limit those accounts. If people want to publish heterosexual content of whatever kind, they really should join or create focused instances for that, such as poast Don't we want to cultivate a more "family-friendly" environment that will attract a bigger public? Uncensored heterosexuality on Free Open Source Software networks is precisely what "Big Gay" points at when they say that only queer social tools are child-safe. We *know* that is in fact the case. It's already a certain workload moderating a Mastodon instance. If we don't sandbox heterosexuality, then why don't we allow the US flag and other offensive content? I actually did a some six weeks of training as a moderator for disqordia dot space, so I do have some personal knowledge of the range of content you could be exposed to if nobody moderates anything. #mastodon #pornography
