Genuine question: why does criticism of Steam seem to be so unpopular here?

Something I’ve noticed in this community is that whenever I criticize Steam, or point out something I don’t like about the platform, I tend to get a ton of downvotes. And honestly, I’m just curious why. This is a piracy-oriented community, so I find it kinda interesting that Steam seems to have such a strong positive reputation here. I’m not saying people shouldn’t like Steam, obviously everyone has their own reasons for using it. Steam is convenient, has huge sales, supports Linux, has a massive library of games, etc. I completely get why people use it. I’m just wondering where the line is for people. For example, do you like Steam despite the DRM because the convenience outweighs the negatives? Do you see Steam as fundamentally different from other forms of DRM? Do you consider Valve one of the “good guys” in the industry? Or do you simply see Steam as a convenient storefront and don’t really think much about the DRM side of it? Or maybe you actually agree with some of the criticism of Steam, but just think it’s being exaggerated. For me personally, I don’t use Steam because I don’t really like having my games tied to an account and a platform. I’d rather have the actual files, be able to back them up, move them around, mod them and know that I still have them years later. That’s basically what I was getting at in that video I made about Steam as well. But I’m not trying to start another “Steam bad!” argument here. I’m genuinely curious because sometimes the reaction seems surprisingly pro-Steam considering the nature of this community. So what is it about Steam that you guys actually appreciate?

Anyone still using usenet?

Title says it. Is anyone still on the newsgroups? For reasons I need to amass a large collection of music in MP3 format, preferably full albums, and I’d like to do it somewhat quickly. Is there a better place to hunt before I buy news server access? I been on land for too many years.

Is there something like Strem.io but for books on mobile?

I really want to get into reading but i’m poor and i don’t have money for books, but it’s okay, because i prefer reading on my phone anyway 🥳. I just find book piracy on the phone so tedious because browsing the web on the phone in general is an awful experience. My adhd gamer brain also tends to gravitate towards the path of less friction, which means the easier i can make it to read the more i will naturally gravitate to reading whenever i have spare time. Something like a Strem.io for books would be super helpful if it exists :D.

Anybody else keeping up with the RevTT / RevoPeers drama?

Just now dropped my account, or at least the best I can do so, since there isn’t a cancel button. For many years, I never had to pay anything because I paid for it with my VPN/seedbox setup. Seeded that shit for 20 years. Some people donate, some people ratio. I’m fine with that. I had bookmarks for certain series that would auto-download. Didn’t download as much as I used to, but I would still log in every month or so and grabbed a few things. The whole VPN/Deluge setup on a Raspberry Pi had its kinks, but I coded around it, fixed it, patched it, and restarted it when I needed to. Recently redid the OS for an major Debian upgrade. About a year ago, all of the seeds broke and the domain changed to revott.me. They had a domain change before (was a .com), so I figured something happened and they had to change it again. Searched around and it looked legit, so I logged on. Wasn’t just a domain change, but a complete management change. Lost all of their peers, and everybody had to manually re-point their seeds to the new domains. Pain in the ass. They had some yearly subscription model now, because there was a lot of frank talk about maintenance costs and ex-mgmt leaving them to hold the bag. Didn’t give a shit about the drama. It wasn’t terribly expensive for a yearly membership, so I paid for it. Didn’t really think about it again until today when I wanted to grab something. New domain: revopeers.me now. Different layout, so I’m suspicious again. Login again to be greeted with just a membership page again. No access to torrents, despite the fact that my 300+ seeds are happily giving up the data. Begging for money again with membership tiers and shady bullshit: RevoPeers is a new platform — legacy membership time from GimmePeers or RevoTT does not carry over automatically. So, I guess all of those people that bought the “Lifetime Founder Status” are scammed again, and have to spend more money for another Lifetime account, because it’s technically a different web site? Situation got so bad that a /r/RevoTT site popped up from ex-members. Of course, that would involve me actually signing up for another shithole web site that I left years ago.

FOSS Torrents: Torrents for various FOSS games, softwares and OSes

cross-posted from: lemdro.id/post/43991444 I’ve found this very good website. Many torrents are unofficial and created by the website staff. Some torrents are official from the project maintainers. I have been seeding torrents on me VPS for some time. Since I don’t use most of the bandwidth. Now I have purchased an HDD IPv6-only VPS in the same datacenter to use as NAS and seed more torrents. If you’ve got some spare bandwidth and disk space, you can seed the softwares you like.

Stremio playing issues.

Hi Peeps. So the issue is that stremio wouldn’t play a movie on my Thomson (onn box clone) media player tonight. I tried different streams, but every single one wouldn’t play. I then tried it on my android phone and loads of streams worked no problem. Any idea why this would happen? Cheers.

Anna's Blog: AI companies destroy physical books — let’s scan rare books before it’s too late

TL;DR: AI companies are secretly buying, scanning, and destroying millions of physical books to train their models, permanently locking human knowledge inside private corporate servers. Anna’s Archive is urgently calling on volunteers worldwide to scan and upload books before this cultural heritage disappears forever.

Where would one find common ish 90s vhs streams/torrents?

I keep holding onto my vhs collection because in my ADHD mind , I won’t be able to find these random titles I have. I know they’re out there and were relatively popular in the 90s, but its hard to find like a “group” of this type of movie. Any ideas ? I’m not good at just searching by title. I need somethibg like "generic weird 90s vhs movies "

can I take the audio track from a video in one language and use it to replace the audio on a different file?

I’m trying to reduce the size of my video collection because I’m running out of storage. My strategy is to look for smaller sized files to replace very large ones. When that fails, I am using handbrake to rencode. Its working, but very slowly due to my ancient computer. Redownloading is the much faster method. Some titles, which were originally released as non-english, have existing small files, but the English audio is only available less commonly as a huge file. Is it possible to redownload the non-english video and map the English audio onto it? It might be too much fooling around to get syncing correct. Extra question, does anybody know how to set up sonarr/radarr to try to reduce filesize automatically? Ive been doing all the downloading by hand.
