How to bulk download papers from PhilPapers.org
Does anybody know of a way to efficiently download, in bulk, all the public papers from PhilPapers.org? Per category. I know this is technically not “piracy” in the sense that I want the public ones, but I’m an active pirate and figured someone here would know a technical way to do this effectively. I tried to use AI for help and it led me down this rabbit hole of using node.js and all sorts of scripts, but after a few hours of playing around I could only get it to download a couple and ran into errors or timeouts the rest of the time.
For instance, there are 252 papers in the “Social and Political Philosophy > Culture and Cultures > Minorities > Implicit Bias” category - I’d like to download everything publicly available without having to do it manually, which is a huge pain given I need to also rename them manually to track what’s what. Problem is, some are .doc, pdf, or lead to other websites where you have to click download again, or are behind paywalls. So it’s sort of a messy process.
Any advice?

Thinking outside the pirate bubble
That post about the Office 2019 license expiring on Mac (lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/70667106) made me think how many of us might not understand how people outside the pirate bubble deal with situations like that. My understanding is that the post’s author completely misses the point regarding what’s happening here. Those who bought an Office license back in 2019 are very much likely to have upgraded their packages already, so they won’t even know about this expiration date. The very few who are still using their old Office version will react at that as if it were a notification, buy a new one and won’t bother about it at all.
My point is that their relationship with paying for software is very different from how a pirate sees it; paying for a new version of an application every couple of years is not a problem for them. It’s like gamers who buy Call of Duty or EA Sports titles every year. It doesn’t make them idiots, it’s just a different way of dealing with money and that service. They like the new shiny stuff and they can pay for it, so I totally understand their choice of buying it.
This reminds me of that Stop Killing Games initiative and some thought I had about it, and also many posts I see of people complaining about the end of physical media. All publishers publish their content following the trends and the technology available at that specific time, always trying to maximize their profits. It was always like that and always will be. If they used in the past physical media it was only because online storefronts did not exist, or we wouldn’t even have had discs or tapes or cartridges to miss.
To understand my point you have to think back about the origin of movie theaters. Movies were released exclusively on theaters and that’s the only place people could watch them. Once they went out of theaters, that was it. The movie was gone and people couldn’t watch it anymore. Nobody complained about it, that’s how things worked. Now imagine movies were invented now, how would studios release them? Actually, you don’t need to imagine it. YouTube and TikTok are here to show how people deal with video on 2026. They consume it online and never bother about owning it or keeping it.
Another example is live sports. You never see people complaining they can’t buy sports seasons on Bluray or download them. We have a culture of watching sports events almost exclusively live (with very few exceptions). If you don’t watch it live, you missed it. People are used about this and don’t complain.
So although I understand those defending the right to keep their media, the publishers have the right to release it however they want. We only see it as a problem because we were used with the way things were, if that way hadn’t existed, we wouldn’t even think about it.

Is vinyl record piracy a thing?
Know those records that you insert into a vinyl record player? Basically those, but pirated since a real one costs money when you purchase them at official music retailers. It involves the process of obtaining a legal copy then using wax molds (to recreate a record) and specialized tools (prevent quality loss) duplicating the record.

Microsoft punishes idiots who purchased a "perpetual" license of Office 2019 for Mac by disabling it next month, pirates unaffected
A license verification certificate expires and when it expires, Microsoft Office for Mac assumes it’s unlicensed even if it has been fully paid for.
So, any idiot who paid for Office 2019 for Mac “perpetual” will lose access to it next month.
The same will happen with Office 2021 and Office 2024 in the future.
Pirates are unaffected, only who paid for the product gets punished
Good job 👍🏻

Playback issues on YouTube on mobile across all third party apps
No matter what app I use now for YouTube, I’m having issues with buffering. Is anyone else experiencing the same thing? Has Google finally found a way to hamper non-Premium users?

Sonarr downloading .exe
Ahoi! Lately my Sonarr has been downloading .exe files from Lime and EZTV a lot. Someone deliberately pushes them just befor an episode airs and Sonarr happily grabs them. They don’t exexute, but still mess up my auto downloads.
Is there a way to prevent Sonarr from downloading them all together? Or at the very least re-download a proper release after noticing the exe file?
I also have private trackers as backup, but prefer public where I can contribute more by seeding to 1:100+ ratios.

Fuck FIFA, where can I watch live games without giving them any money?
I refuse to let this corrupt organization take away a game that my family grew up watching, playing, and bonding over. We don’t see each other that often now and I want to catch a game or two with them.
I’m in Canada
