On June 30, 1960, Patrice Lumumba stood before King Baudouin of Belgium and delivered an Independence Day speech that shattered the fiction of Belgian colonial benevolence. Instead of thanking the colonial power, he spoke of forced labour, racial humiliation and systematic violence. Six months later, he was assassinated.
