I've been thinking about this conversation for a while and … I'm convinced I'm right.
You can blame #SocialMedia platforms all you like, but that's not where the blame lies. You cannot combine widespread popularity with a thin skin towards assholes.
It's simple statistics: Let's say the kind of asshole who *really enjoys* being an asshole represents less than 1% of the population. (Probably higher, using 1% for illustration.)
