so there’s some width to come off yet, but I took the corners off at the skinny end and gave the new top fretboard its basic shape now I’ve glued it on for the first time and tomorrow I’ll put the “e”strings on it and mark it for its eventual, final width and shape. . Then it’s sand it down to that size and shape, that’ll take a minute, means a fair amount of wood off the sides of the whole neck. . Then it’s fret it out. . THEN it’s adjusting the shape of the original fretboard under the new one until it’s perfect. I’m already a lot further along than I thought, but that could still take all summer. 🥹🎶💜 . /27 #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

OK, so that break near the headstock maybe wasn’t fixed, or I broke it again. I put some strings on it to set my width and shape of the new fretboard and then I tuned it up to see how far it would bend and that break opened right up! . I tried to get some hot water to it partly to wash away any soluble glue but also to open the pores of the wood and glued it again, but honestly all you can do there is glue and I don’t see how it’s ever enough. I’ll be shocked if it stays put. . Apparently they do sometimes though? . Guitar heads get snapped off all the time, right? And you glue them back on and carry on, is that right? 🥹🎶 😬🫣 . /28 #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

ah, I’ve a devil of a choice now, keep shaping this fretboard, do the next thing, finish the job when the neck may just snap off again, or tune it up again now, snap it again now? . I don’t see anything on the wood glue bottle about curing, just clamp for 25 minutes, and I had gotten it all wet first so I left the clamps on overnight JIC, do I test it now or is it too soon? . Is there a #Luthier in the house? . /30 #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

I love you guys but nobody answers goddam questions. 😠 . I decided that what I needed to do besides gluing the break was making it strong as I can from the other side, the fretboard side, meaning take not another millimetre off of the fretboard at that end and attaching the new one as solidly as possible. . Plus I decided that’s structural, and I ought to finsh that first, before I start worrying about shape - plus I realized it’s a new fretboard, no frets yet, so no reason it’s the under piece that has to be shaped. . So I can go back to a normal sequence, shape the final top fretboard instead. If I sand through the fret slots, I have a fret saw, I can just cut them again. . I took it off, one time only, took the peak off the under piece one last time and glued the new one on again, and was not miserly with the glue, that ought to be permanent. . Thanks for nuthin’ kids 😀 . /31 #Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

It’s white wood glue in the break, although I think I saw Julian do something on The Repair Shop using some super strong polymer glue. I don’t have that of course and not sure what to buy, so I tried the white stuff, and if that doesn’t work, I’ll still have that to sesrch for and try. . the fretboard is on with that horrible to use Titebond Liquid Hide Glue, so in theory it could still be re-done if need be. Did the repair last night and the fretboard this afternoon and I have other things tomorrow so by the time I’m planning to take the clamps off and mess with it, it will be tomorrow night, everything should be as set as can be. . Then I’m back to putting the “e,” strings on, drawing my lines and paring it down to size. . It’s a two edged sword: I invest more labour in a perhaps still broken neck, but if I take the time and I do, the glue is probably continuing to dry and cure while I do. . And that’s my decision right now: shape it as much as possible - the width is certainly possible - before I test the break again and if that holds, see the amount of flex and start shaping the top. . /32 #Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

nope, changing that plan now, going to carve the width and the back /shoulders a bunch, maybe finish it, to taste sort of thing before I ever tighten the strings. . I’ve another little problem, I’m squeezing the spread of the strings all around, that’s why all my saddles are notched, and first, I did pretty good for proportions on this saddle - except the low “G” string is too close to its mate, I need somehow to move that over a bit. But the larger issue is see the pic, you can’t squeeze your string spread on a 12 string, there’s no wiggle room. . I’ve been thinking I would try to take the sides off of the forward bridge pins, but I just had an incrementally better thought, to lop the tops off of all six of the forward ones. . Something has to be done. They’re going to pop out like bullets. . /33 #Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

I’ve got the fretboard width almost where I think I want it now, almost down to the width of my smallest 12 string nut - and Good Lady, with that fresh, full new fretboard right now it’s as round and fat as the fattest guitar neck from a hundred years ago. . I can’t touch finger to thumb around it anywhere, not even close. A lot of work yet, and an adequate outcome is growing more unlikely by the day. . But hey, as Mom used to say, can’t dance and too fat to fly. If it doesn’t work out, I can still butcher and convert it like the other one. 😀 . (Geez, that’s a great title for a disabled person’s autobiography, huh.) /34 #Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

Well, the second idea was way worse, but I’m stoked about the first one, that’ll do. . . . . . . . Donkey 😜🙄 You may have to zoom in a bit 💜 . The spread doesn't look great, but the strings aren't tight. I'm putting that off as long as possible for the repair to cure, but I wanted them on, even loose to finish shaping the width. I made a little change for the "G" string notch, turned out it was the octave one that had to move, and I tightened those ones momentarily to check, and it's better. . /35 #Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject
