"Esther Horvath was born in Hungary and holds a master’s degree in economics from the University of West Hungary. In 2012 she relocated to New York City to attend the International Centre of Photography, where she completed studies in documentary photography and photojournalism. Subsequently, she shifted her focus to science and environmental photography, aligning her practice with polar regions and climate-research expeditions.
Since 2015, Horvath has concentrated her work on the Arctic and Antarctic regions, documenting scientific teams, remote research stations and the operations of the MOSAiC expedition in the Central Arctic Ocean aboard the icebreaker Polarstern. Her photographic assignments have included seventeen scientific expeditions and major publication credits in outlets such as National Geographic, The New York Times and GEO.
Horvath’s recognition includes the first-prize in the “Environment – Singles” category of the World Press Photo Award in 2020 for a polar-region image and the Infinity Award from the International Centre of Photography in 2022 for her climate-focused body of work. She is affiliated with the International League of Conservation Photographers and serves as a science photographer for the Alfred Wegener Institute in Germany."
