3/ We had to make some sacrifices, like move to rural #AppalachianOhio but that fit our lifestyle. We are still 20 minutes west or east on good roads to shopping and life, including big box retail. 20 minutes west has more than 20 minutes east. lol We were lucky enough to find a property that had promise and good bones that was cheaper to buy than a most low end new cars. We found good labor, so we would save up for materials, then labor. The crew of 3 cost $500 for a 7 hour day so we would usually save up for 2 days materials and labor and get as much done as we can. Cut a lot of extra things out of our life to get it done but found other things to make up for it.

Life in rural #AppalachianOhio: Penny wanted a restaurant pizza and the nearest one is 15 miles but delivers to a community center 5 miles away up the mountain. They won't come the last 5-miles down the mountain. She sat up there for around 45 minutes after they called and said they were on the way there but they never showed up. Ends up, their delivery car broke down on the way so she had to drive the entire 15 miles each way to get it.

We had to take a trip to #Portsmouth, #Ohio. What a weird little town. It's laid out awful and traffic was bad. People were friendly, though. #AppalachianOhio On the way back home, we pulled over for gas at a roadside station that probably has been there for 60 years or more, and as Penny was getting out to fill the tank, Goober came up to pump the gas. Who knew... Still a full-service gas station in 2026. It took ole Goober a minute to get to us because, like in the tv show, he was deep in conversation with a customer. The fog coming off the Ohio River was awesome. It was warm out but the water is still cold. It looked like ghosts hoovering over the water.

@notyourfanboy@kolektiva.social Where would you like me to shop? I don't shop at Home Depot for obvious reasons. I'm in the middle of #AppalachianOhio I rarely shop at Amazon. There are no mom and pop stores, and haven't been even before Walmart opened a decade ago. I'm doing the lessor of two evils without traveling literally 120 miles round trip

Oh crud. Where we live in #AppalachianOhio you don't have to get "building permits. #Ohio Yesterday, I found out that you are supposed to self-report to the county auditor (tax dept) any "improvements" over $2000 within 60 days of starting or they hit you hard when they do the property reevaluations or, if they find out about it, and our Republican county is big on hitting people hard. I am self-reporting today to reduce any penalties, if any. "Upon the discovery of a building or improvement that has been constructed but of which the county auditor has not been notified as required by this section, the county auditor shall appraise it and place it upon the tax list and duplicate at its taxable value, together with a penalty equal to fifty per cent of the amount of taxes that would have been charged against the building or improvement from the date of construction to the date of discovery had the county auditor been notified of its construction as required by this section." If we end up in tax court, everybody on the fediverse knows we started our improvements with the intent of replacing the flat roof, #PaulsRoof, (which should be exempt from reporting) then at some point, decided to turn the carport into a health room after the bad winter prevented Penny from going to elective cardiac rehab like she did three times per week for over a year after her heart attack.

All the old yards that used to be filled with MAGAscape, which went away for a long time after 2020 election and Jan 6, and didn't come back in 2024, have now been remade with Red White And Blue. I guess they have moved on to Iran Warscape. Still, like it was post Jan 6, Trump is not being featured in the latest political landscaping choices here in my area in deep red #AppalachianOhio

They are in the first stages of building a 1.3 gigawatt data center around 8 miles away from me that will use 11.4 million megawatt hours annually. That's 31 times the amount of electricity my rural #AppalachianOhio county uses in a year.
