The lack of AVX support on those CPUs really started to make modern computing harder in the last year or so.

@Oregon_Pacifist@retro-gaiden.com I bought a surplus one like this from a university and upgraded it to damn near max. One thing to watch out for, especially on Linux, is the fan profiles let stuff get really hot. There's a ton of excellent resources out there to help you max it out. Good luck and have fun!

#PatchTuesday 2026-07 Patching experience in my test lab (#homelab). Windows 11 - No issues on any test machines / VMs. Windows 10 - Normal, ESU machine rebooted a few more times than I expected. Windows Server 2016 - Normal, Servicing Stack Update (KB5099542). New Servicing Stack every month now, I guess. Windows Server 2019 - Normal, uneventful. Windows Server 2022 - Normal, uneventful. Windows Server 2025 - Normal, uneventful. Note: Wow, per bleepingcomputer, 570 vulnerabilities fixed, 3 zero-days (2 actively exploited), 141 remote code execution flaws – that's A LOT.

@jimsalter@fosstodon.org In the MS model, you're meant to control this with Sites & Services (and Subnets). The DC locator process should then take over and prioritize local DCs, but remote DCs will still be occasionally checked. If you're in a scenario where specific remote DCs are unreachable, this turns into a slightly more complicated scenario that will involve editing the correctly building the sites and sitelinks, then either letting the domain reconfigure or forcing the KCC process.
