This is so real. I remember being a preteen when pagers were a big thing, and seeing a newspaper article written for parents that listed all of these ‘pager codes’ so parents could decode what their kids were saying to each other. Out of a list of perhaps 20, I only recognized 3 and the rest were so elaborate and clearly made up for this article. A few years later, I saw a nearly identical article listing largely the same ‘codes’ but for AIM chats. Shit like ‘2219’ means ‘parents nearby, pick the drugs up at Sally’s instead’. Like wtf? Like you said, inventing a largely imagined culture for the generation they’re completely out of touch with. Instead of ‘decoding’ what kids are saying, how about actually _talking_ to them?

I still say a lot of it too, dweeb and grody being choice to use at opportune moments. I personally love slang, without it our language skills would remain static and even degrade. IMO slang helps language evolve.

100% agree with you. My childhood was so steeped in the nostalgia of a generation that hit its prime before I was born that I legitimately knew more about 60’s and 70’s popular culture than I did about the popular culture in my own time because of how hijacked it was by boomer nostalgia. Even in media designed for my generation, the message was clear: boomer culture was the peak culture and anything that came after was a cheap imitation or flat out ‘wrong’.

Let me be clear: millennials have their own issues with nostalgia, and I also see some of us giving younger people the same treatment: ‘oh you don’t remember that song/movie/actor from when I was growing up and you weren’t even born yet?! Did you even have a childhood?!’ type of crap. While this isn’t ok either, I can’t help but wonder if because that’s the attitude we received from our elders growing up, some of us use it for a template to handle our own feelings of irrelevance as we age. My message to these people as well as a reminder to myself as I get even older: let the youths be. Let them enjoy being young and see it simply as that. It has nothing to do with you, and your job is to listen to them and nurture their efforts to improve their world so they can continue to do so for those that come after them.

I hate how right this is. It’s been a boomer world since before I was born, and I’ve spent the past 4 decades waiting for it to end already. Not only my generation, but the one before it and the two after have been completely passed over. Our elders are too busy being completely addled with their addiction to relevance and self-importance that they actually believe anyone younger than them is just a child that needs a firm hand and ‘tough love’ to ‘straighten them out’. ‘News reports’ like this further enforce this idea; the world is full of idiot kids that they, mighty boomers, need to stand in front of in order to ‘right the ship’.

Yeah mate this only works under the assumption that not only do his followers read the Bible they also understand it.

Honestly I don’t think it’s even about him as a person or them actually seeing him as a deity. I believe it’s about this man’s ability to tap into their deepest grievances and fears, as well as providing a big ‘fuck you’ to all of those that tell them they’re wrong and hold them to account. He spoke directly to the most frightened and ugly of us, and holy shit turns out they were ready for him and we weren’t. Now it’s been a fucking decade. Yes, friends, I repeat a FUCKING DECADE of this shit. They now have and have had every reason to double, triple, and whatever this is beyond that down because everything their leader does validates and confirms what they believe. They have found purpose, they have found ground, they have found someone that infuriates those that oppose them and they have full unguarded room to keep going. They love this, they love seeing the rest of us suffer ‘as they have suffered’, and they have a leader telling them they’ve been right the whole time. Long story short: imagine, deeply, for more than one minute how you would feel if the left had our own Trump. Not only that but one that actually got things done in a way never seen before. Then you will start to understand this whole ‘messiah’ bs. It’s pure metaphor mixed with a shitpost grin.

Idk, him declaring war on the citizens of his own country in order to actively suppress the effects of their protests while threatening to attack another country for actively suppressing their own protesting citizens always smelt really funny to me.
