Colorado mountain person. I make things and go to conventions. Generally I'll post content related to my hobbies, which include #car restoration, #outdoor experiences, #furry events, #games (tabletop and PC games, sometimes older consoles), #Linux, #computers, and fixing stuff in general.

I am online to be silly. I'm usually silly.

Stopped by Rino Country Club in Denver. I found the bathroom graffiti especially comforting. No idea who the artist is, sadly. #graffiti #furry #art #bathroom

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social Mine was Tonga, circa 2013. At the time, there was NOTHING in the sky. Minimal development across the nation's ~170 islands. You'd see local light pollution on Tongatapu but on the half dozen other small islands I visited the stars were bright enough to forget about the tiny little refuge you were clinging to, against the miles and miles and miles of water stretching in every direction, and that just a paltry simulacrum of the endless expanse above you. You'd hold your hand up to the sky and let it drop because it eclipsed so many stars. And you'd look towards the sea and see that light mirrored endlessly in the crests of ten thousand waves racing every which way. You'd grow accustomed to noise of the water during the day - and then you'd actually *see* the source of that noise at night. And you'd smoke a cigarette, and yell into the night, and then go back inside, defeated. I love the cold and the thin mountain air, but one of my fondest nature memories was built in the heart of the ocean.

@cwebber@social.coop beautifully written, thank you! I'm a silly furry creature on the Internet. I'm pan. I have a trans partner. The bulk of my friends and family are queer and/or neurodivergent. I am fucking TERRIFIED of the idea that I might have to choose between my actual life and a "work safe" persona to do basic things like "maintain a bank account" and "own property" and "have access to medical care". And that's exactly the direction a closed, age-verified, ID-required internet is taking us. Make no mistake about it, it's not about protecting children or eliminating fraud (the first clue should be that the proponents of these bills are mostly child rapists and/or virulent fraudsters). It's about documenting, monitoring, and eventually unpeopling "undesirables". And the definition of "undesirables" can change with one stroke of a pen.

Random question: for folks using screen readers, how does the "degree" symbol work? Specifically: ° I'm trying to be better about alt text. Does it work better to say "100 degrees Fahrenheit", or does "100 °F" present the same way? Is "100 deg F" an acceptable abbreviation? I welcome input here, especially from folks that use screen readers daily. Again, just trying to be better where I can. #screenreader #ui #accessibility #question #advice

@tilton@fursuits.online I once met a long-term former partner in a traffic pileup (driver hit the car behind him, that car hit his car, his car rammed into mine from behind, a few weeks later we were replicating that scenario in reverse with our meat vehicles). Love can bloom anywhere!

Update: it works! ...in a manner of speaking. You have to hold or pulse the button to keep the scene lit, and the FOV is incredibly tight with lots of distortion around the perimeter. Oh, and you have to fiddle with the focus basically continuously. Still pretty freaking cool though. I'm going to see if I can cobble together a tripod mount and hang out on the back patio with it tomorrow. Maybe I'll see some cool nocturnal critters!

I'm still trying to reclaim space in my workshop! Four things for sale this time:

  1. Nintendo 3DS XL with Circle Pad Pro
  2. Anbernic Win600 with CachyOS installed
  3. Dell Latitude 5300 2-in-1 touchscreen laptop (no OS)
  4. Macbook Air 2018 A1932 with macOS and CachyOS

This will be a thread with a detailed post about each item; please respond publicly if you're interested in an item (so folks have an idea if there's someone else ahead of them), and we can take the conversation to DMs/email to sort out payment and shipping. I can take payment via KoFi, Zelle, or Venmo. Shipping in the USA is included in the cost! I always prefer to sell on Mastodon so I don't have to give eBay 25% of my sales AND because I'd rather see queer furry nerds get their paws on this stuff.

Boosts and questions are welcome!

@alice@lgbtqia.space Some time ago, Google realized they could make super tall stacks of money recording and reselling (with minimal obfuscation) every conversation a person has, be it email, private messaging, one-sided search, etc. The goal of every "tech visionary" since then has been to find a new unmonitored conversational niche to capitalize on. Google currently does this with conversations recorded from people in the same general area as a phone (a public conversation, but not one the participants would reasonably expect to be shared with ten thousand advertising companies). But hey, it's cool, it lets Google serve ads for baby clothes/accessories to people who don't even know they're pregnant yet. Progress! Super creepy, but they've coerced consent by being the biggest game in town, so it's okay (legally). Meanwhile, bottom feeders like Evan are both incapable of respecting consent -and- incapable of coming up with an original idea. He's a tech visionary though! Big time, 4real!! What a sad little person.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social Nevermind, I'm no longer interested. "If the Commodore Store is missing an app a user wants, like a home security app or an authenticator, there's a whitelist process to get it. Simpson says people can submit requests to sideload an app, and these are vetted and approved through an AI system. If the AI has trouble deciding whether to allow it, a human steps in. Not every app will be granted access, as the company wants to maintain the Callback’s raison d'être." @nixCraft@mastodon.social the "no browser" bit is a weird choice, I see what they're shooting for but there are a million uses for a browser and frankly if I'm paying for mobile data I want the ability to look stuff up on the internet. If there's an option to remove that limitation I'd be interested, although the price point feels a bit high. There's something to be said for the flip phone form factor (I like the additional screen protection).

@dzwiedziu@mastodon.social @alice@lgbtqia.space I knew about the push towards anti-intellectualism of course (that's just glaringly obvious these days) but I was not familiar with the rejection of modernism angle. Thanks for that, I've got some reading to do now! I'd also theorize that overlap is also attributed to LLM's potential uses as a surveillance tool and a generator of false/misleading information. Anything that allows easier tracking/categorization of "undesireables" is going to see the stratospheric levels of investment we're seeing in the current LLM hype cycle. And we're seeing a ton of LLM-generated misinformation designed to crowd out actual useful info with noise (which brings us full circle to what Alice is stuck dealing with). Imagine how bad this is on the big corpo social media platforms!
