We've been buried in littleFedi work lately, and there's one piece I want to talk about because it's the one I'm genuinely excited about: littleMesh.
The problem is an old one. Federation assumes you have a domain, a public IP, an open port, a TLS certificate. Fine if you're renting a VPS somewhere. Not fine if your instance lives on a Raspberry Pi in your house, behind CGNAT, with an ISP that will never hand you a real IP address no matter how nicely you ask. Until now, that simply meant no federation for you. Full stop.
littleMesh gets rid of that requirement entirely, without asking you to build any of the infrastructure above.
On first run, your instance generates its own Ed25519 keypair. That key becomes your identity, no domain required, because your instance's address is derived straight from your public key, in the form .mesh.. Then your node opens an outbound connection to a "lighthouse", a small, publicly reachable relay, and registers itself there. Since the connection is outbound, it works from behind any NAT, any CGNAT, with zero port forwarding. The ISP never even notices.
When someone wants to reach you, they ask the lighthouse to open a circuit. The lighthouse introduces both sides, you call back, and it splices the connection together, but it only ever sees encrypted bytes, never your actual traffic.
Once the introduction is made, if you happen to have a reachable address after all, both sides skip the relay and talk directly. If not, the relay just keeps carrying you, quietly, in the background.
And if you already run an instance with a real domain, you can still turn on littleMesh, purely to reach mesh-only instances. Your own identity doesn't change at all.
There will be a default pair of community lighthouses, so you don't even need to find or run your own relay to get started, just say yes during littleFedi init and you're on the mesh.
The fediverse shouldn't require you to be reachable. It should reach you.

I’m not sure whether A) it’s impossible to complain about “virtue signaling” in a constructive way or B) my pattern recognition skills automatically-but-not-necessarily-correctly draw the line between “person who uses the phrase ‘virtue signaling’ unironically” and “person who is an asshole” with a high enough false positive rate for it to be a problem.

it's so odd how some people desperately cling to whatever the free software foundation says rather than developing their own opinions on what it means for software to be "free." it has vaguely religious vibes, not in the sense that they believe the foot-cheese-eater is a prophet, but in the sense that they really want a set of values accompanied by arbitrary rules to be delivered to them from on high.

gave asahi on m3 a whirl the other day. even without true GPU support, it seems fine for my day-to-day of research in a browser, writing in emacs, etc. with the caveat that llvmpipe chews through battery life. i was getting estimates of about six hours, which is an incredible delta from macOS. i’m curious to see how this improves over time, but also, it seems like my perception of the macbook air’s utility has flip-flopped.
before i thought it would be great to leverage the things i like about linux in the best Arm laptop available to me. compact, high-res display, excellent battery life; hell yeah. “macbook air without macos” sounds great.
now i can get longer battery life with a display whose proportions i prefer that i can use when there’s more than a flickering candle in a corner and be more comfortable typing if i use the framework laptop, but i miss out on the “i really just need this fucking zoom call in my browser to go off without a hitch” of macOS. “macbook air without macos” sounds kinda bad.
(this is not an endorsement of the framework laptop—i can’t update the BIOS, which might be a good thing considering the number of bugs their updates have introduced, and there are so many other weird or annoying things i simply wouldn’t tolerate if i had more money. which i wouldn’t spend on either of these laptops now because fuck these companies.)

this is probably related to why so many folks seem to be obsessed with the "enforcement" angle whenever restrictions like this are introduced. "how will this be enforced?" "this rule is unenforcable." "I wouldn't have a problem with this, but [some gibberish about enforcement.]" there's a weird fixation on consequences--often framed as punishment--as if they are the only reason to have a rule in place.
on the one hand, yeah, a "rule" without consequences is really more of a guideline. on the other hand, why is it so fucking hard for you to follow a rule if it's unclear how exactly you'll be punished for breaking it? couldn't you just not be a dick and either do what you're told or fuck off somewhere else? why is the default response "you better tell me how hard you're gonna spank me if I'm naughty" every fucking time?

fun thing about a back injury like the one i had earlier this year is that nobody has any interest in the underlying cause until i jump through enough hoops to convince the insurance that imaging should be covered, racking up hundreds of dollars of medical debt in the process, despite having a history of similar but less severe injuries dating back to like 2012.
another fun thing is that i am more likely to re-injure myself, but not really in predictable ways. moving thousands of pounds of stuff repeatedly across floors, steps, moving trucks, etc.? just fine! bending over, or driving in a mildly uncomfortable position for a few hours? hope you remember to pull from your dwindling supply of muscle relaxers, fucko! (i didn’t!)
exercise (both strength training and cardio) would help but i have been unable to set up my fitness equipment for reasons outside my control and, similarly, i haven’t been able to do things outside because of the “heat dome” and canada’s spontaneous combustion. and now my back is “touchy” enough that i can’t do much of anything, especially if stairs are involved! and they’re almost always involved!

finally installed iOS 26 last night and wow this sucks so much more (or i’m noticing it more because i engage with core apps and services far more often) than macOS Tahoe.
getting from an app to the home screen has a noticeable delaysafari’s “compact” view sucks ass and even after switching to the old layout everything is just kind of a bummer? remember when the current tab had an outline in the tab overview?they changed the fucking keyboard. for the worse. and check out the attached screenshot to see why i have no idea if there’s a typo. what the fuck is this. who is it helping? not me! (the only way to fix that was to dismiss—via this shit-ass new check bar—the keyboard and re-invoke it.)music gets worse with every iterationi had to reduce animations, increase contrast, switch to “tinted,” and probably something else just to avoid having a visceral response to liquid glass every time i looked at my phone yet the lock screen “buttons” for flashlight and camera still look awful
so yeah i’d say this is a resounding success guys i’m glad someone got absurdly rich for hitting their fuckin’ okr or pki or whatever
