That job is more than any person with a heart can take without it getting a piece of them. I have nothing but gratitude and respect and a bit of awe for my colleagues who are still there showing up. We’ve seen the hats, but one of the main drivers of this trade was a bit of fashion called the “merkin”. Is it really that weird that I have never in my entire life even considered waiting around somewhere just for the chance to “see someone famous” who I wouldn’t have any interaction with other than just being near them? Like, I don’t have the module or something… also I tend to a avoid: a) crowds b) queues So, is this like an immunity against celebrity culture?

I don't share my work very often, but especially because you mention cuneiform, I actually have "invented" a new zero, called zo, in a modern base-60 number system, inspired by the Babylonian system and Wu Xing https://github.com/hyxos/hyxos_numerals/blob/main/GRAMMAR.md There is a very poorly written and not maintained api to generate the glyphs at https://hyxos.io/docs I'm plodding away in my spare time trying to turn it into something more usable to make it more accessible for everyone... up to this point it's mostly been used by my wife and I to build card game prototypes. I'm hoping to release a much more polished glyph builder this year, I really want to make a typeface, and oh boy, that is a deep, deep rabbithole

@annyr@fidelis.social I seem to remember hearing that Elohim was not only plural, but a possibly very old word that may have originally been the irregular feminine plural like nashim “women”, even though -im is the regular masculine plural in Hebrew. The archeology shows that goddess worship was very common in that region for tens of thousands of years of prehistory. Something the patriarchal monotheists did their best to supplant and wipe records of. I would make sense that their earliest words for “god” originated in prehistory but the semantics were lost.

@mattblaze@federate.social yes, we are lucky to be in Ontario, where there has been a huge push over the last decade to actually support emergency workers, acknowledging and supporting sufferers of PTSD. Having grown up in the US I shudder when I think of what EMS workers there have to face… much more gun violence, low wages, no public health support. It’s a terrible burden for those people and no signs of getting better any time soon.

@alcinnz@floss.social I’ve been diving deep here myself, and have learned that typefaces and rendering them in a way that doesn’t look like crap is actually incredibly sophisticated technology disguised as trivially simple if you’re thinking about it from the angle of “just writing some text”. Learned recently that Knuth delayed publishing his masterpiece for ten years until he got TeX into a state where it could render his vision adequately.

I don’t know how it happened, but despite the Age of Doom™ we live in got to hang with some friends for a few days by a lake and I’m feeling kinda happy? My stress response seems to be “work harder” and I’ve been having trouble just working a normal amount. Living a balanced life is such a puzzle.
