I've discovered a 10/10 critical-severity zero-day vulnerability in the ignition lock systems of every car ever produced with electronic ignition: If you strip out the main wiring harness and rewire the entire car, and bypass every computer module with specially-crafted replacements that lack authentication, an unauthorized user can start and drive any vehicle without restriction. All vehicle manufacturers *must* immediately develop and release patches to prevent widespread exploitation of this severe design flaw that mere human security experts never found after decades of conventional testing.

@0x00string@infosec.exchange Yeah, the pattern seems to be that some people will see an actual problem, and kinda uncritically accept the torment nexus' talking points claiming that giving it exactly what it asks for will solve the problem. But the torment nexus does not ask for things or propose real solutions to real problems in good faith, and *WE* know that, but not everyone else does: Some people still believe there's a *possibility* the torment nexus might not lie to their face, and just might actually do better this time if we give it what it wants.

@orbman@infosec.exchange I can see how it would look reasonable if it actually solved content moderation, but it doesn't: It gives platforms legal permission to continue *not* doing effective content moderation, by turning it into an excuse to extract more data from users who want to play by the "rules" with no benefit to anyone. Just like how Facebook growing more and more invasive and controlling about people using their "real identity" didn't make Facebook a better/safer place to be, and Twitter demanding phone verification for accounts didn't make Twitter less overwhelmed by spam bots.

@da_667@infosec.exchange Yeah I *super* don't understand this mindset of "every blog post or written article must have at least one image"; it's become enough of a modern standard/expectation that I feel *some* need to do more of it in my own writing, but I refuse to force it - my blog is on the same site as my photography portfolio, so if I don't have a specific relevant image for a post, it'll just randomly attach a photo I've taken to the post, which feels less stupid than the marketing slop graphics that show up in "professional" stuff :-P

@nyanbinary@infosec.exchange I absolutely agree with the impulse to try to make that into a "one file for everything" situation, but a redirect isn't appropriate for this sort of file for the reasons others mentioned. What I do for this on my own stuff is to alias to the same file from every vhost (I literally only have three robots.txt files for a couple dozen domains that all have different sites), but that kinda only works if all the websites are on the same server; though you could have all the sites/domains reverse-proxy to one shared location for that specific file and others you want to share. Alternately, you could make it part of the deployment process, which works especially great if they're using some sort of static generator: Make one of the build steps "pull X file from Y other repository", or put the security.txt file in a repository that the other sites' repos include as a submodule. And failing all else, if you wanna make it "enforced by policy" (aka "it's y'all's job to figure this out and I don't care how"), just write an automated script that checks that specific file for every domain on a regular basis, diffs it against the expected/central one, and sends a notification or opens a "fix this" ticket in the issue tracker every time it's missing or outdated :)

Had a hunch about the rendering issues I was seeing in Contribute, so I did a quick test, and confirmed that it *does* respond to the special Internet Explorer conditional comment tags, where it behaves like Internet Explorer 8: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/internet-explorer/ie-developer/compatibility/ms537512(v=vs.85) So, it IS technically possible for me to do a version of my site that works correctly in browsers older than Internet Explorer 10/11, without really messing with how it renders in anything newer than that. I'd have to kinda approach it as a completely different layout rather than an adaptation of the existing one, but it can also be simpler. I might end up doing that regardless, because I like retro computing, and more importantly, I like the people who *love* retro computing <3 And it would also facilitate the possibility of using my old copy of Contribute to post stuff!

@Nyan@blahaj.zone Agreed 100%, and I actually started drafting more of a thread exploring how SEO and "professionalism" no longer carry value, but accessibility is more important than ever, then decided it'd be better suited to a proper blog post. I'm working on it <3 But I don't see accessibility and web design experimentation as being mutually-exclusive at *all*, nor do I think it's productive to frame it that way, especially since, statistically, most of the people making personal web pages in the "web 1.0" tradition don't need any convincing that accessibility is important. They might need some instruction on *how*, or perspectives on what exactly "accesibility" *means* in the context of web design, but I feel like the initial hurdle of stressing the importance of accessible web design as an abstract priority has already been cleared for most people who'd be inclined to do it as a hobby - maybe I'm overly optimistic about *people* in that regard. (Accessibility in the for-profit web design space is still very much a fight that needs fighting - losing that fight with a past employer is one of the reasons I don't do web dev professionally anymore - but the culture of not-for-profit artistic web design that's sprung up in recent years is VERY different, which was the whole point of my original message <3)

@nyanbinary@infosec.exchange @Epic_Null@infosec.exchange Indeed, though I personally find myself caring about mass-adoption a lot less, at least from a platform perspective: In the wake of Twitter self-destructing, everyone was so focused on finding The One Replacement where *everyone* could go, myself included. But, looking at the social media landscape that emerged in the years since, I've started to realize...I don't really care about that anymore, and more importantly, I no longer believe mass adoption of a *single specific website/server* is sustainable or desirable at all. Unpacking that is probably a longer discussion - I've got a draft article in progress about it - but basically, so much digital ink has been spilled on worrying about or trying to solve mass-scale platform moderation, because at the scale of Twitter or Facebook, it's kinda impossible for any one group or organization to keep up anymore, even if they have tech-billionaire money. And where I'm at with it is "well then just don't grow that big". As long as interconnectivity exists, we don't all need to be on the same servers, kinda like how multi-network chat apps like Trillian did a really good job of tearing down the walls between the first generation of IM services, without any one particular service needing to carry the load of the entire world's chat communication. How to turn that into a communication and onboarding strategy is where these thoughts need to cook a little more, but I do think there's a lot we haven't tried yet in that department. And my own definition of "mass adoption" has evolved in such a way that I no longer see that as a competition, I see it as *coexistence*. And through the lens of smaller-scale services coexisting, "convenience" no longer has to mean the same thing to everyone, or carry the same priority, because all possible definitions can exist in parallel, and that's ok <3
