TFW a project you've been working on actually works. Good news: I have a working IRC client for my cardputer. It's super basic, and I can feel my glasses prescription worsening while I use it, but the actual use of it wasn't the point, per se. It's more a 'can I' than a 'should I'.

@benkramer@dice.camp I use it more out of habit than anything else. This is the only *big* issue I've encountered, though, tbh. It's just this and the Wayland is Waylanding thing, and I don't really consider that to be as big a problem, given Proton and Wayland don't get along well, sometimes, and the primary use case for this computer is games. I've got a root cause for this one, with some questionable default choices. Maybe I'll finally stop and try to figure out the wayland issue next.

So here's the fun thing: I didn't run this. The history.log for apt says it was unattended-upgrade. This update occurred behind the scenes, errored, and then rather than doing anything about, it just decided, oh, lol, that's cool, this won't cause any problems whatsoever. Which is why problem always felt to intermittent. It looks like it's been happening on unattended-upgrade invoked upgrades instead of upgrades I've invoked. Guess unattended-upgrade is getting the Office Space treatment. That said, I would love to know who decided that failing silently is the optimal use case, here? Maybe this should be put before the user, or reattempted (with a limited number of retries because I could very easily see a ticket out there for Ubuntu in an endless update attempt loop...) or something. I have *questions.*

I'm annoyed. Ubuntu on my desktop did its thing again where it just... didn't install things like graphics and networking and I got treated to a delightful default display resolution. Finally decided to do some troubleshooting on it. First step seems to be to go log hunting. Okay, cool. The update I just did as part of my fix is in here. Cool. Hey, let's scroll up a little, and- Hey, what the fuck?

I was watching a video yesterday which stated something to the effect of "if our websites in 2010 behaved like they do today, we would (rightly) assume that they had a virus." And man. Ow. "Enable cookies?" "Subscribe to our newsletter for 10% off!" "This site would like to send you notifications." And then the whole page is so insidiously insufferably inundated with ads, including videos fixed in the corner and at the top. God. Not to use a blinking neon sign that says "I'm old!" But. I miss the days where the worst you had to worry about was why your friend had to use that awful screechy music. Or worse, had a midi playing in the background. It wasn't bad the first time, but a few loops in? I'm begging you to stop. I dunno. I'm glad I switched to Linux, added an ad blocker to my network, et cetera. I shouldn't have to go to such measures to just... Use the Internet.

Picked up a new device: Cardputer ADV. And the LoRa hat, of course (I'm still messing with meshtastic!) The device itself is *neat.* Length and width-wise, the size of a credit card. Thickness... not so much. The LoRa hat makes it sit at an angle, which *can* put it to face you. Wish they'd made it a flushmount thing, but know why they didn't - there's a pair of buttons on the top, as well. In theory, one firmware at a time. In reality, there's a launcher firmware you can burn that can then be used to download other firmwares. :D Since I know some folks who follow me are radio nerds - the LoRa hat adds a better LoRa transceiver and GPS. Comes with an 868 mhz antenna (Hunting for a 915 mhz for stateside use.) The Meshtastic firmware itself is... interesting. TBH, I wouldn't use it on the device itself - responsiveness is abysmal. You *can* pair it like any other BT device, so that's something at least? Other neat firmwares for the thing. Wifi radar (gives you rough ranges, can help home in), a pwnagotchi-like firmware called porkchop with the most fantastic sense of style in terms of documentation, and like a dozen others I've downloaded but not yet tried. This thing's gonna be my new favorite toy, I suspect. Might even be something I try building something for. (Baby's first IRC client?) #cardputer #ActuallySecurityRelated

With Nova having gone Nova, what launchers (...that aren't the default...) are folks using these days?

Today in #TTRPG and #DND news:

Apparently, Vampire: The Masquerade is coming to... #dnd5e? Guess what, if you're confused, so am I!

Context: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/2195-q3-2026-partnered-content-release-schedule

I'm gonna be honest here, I don't know how I feel about this. It encourages people to play more D&D, rather than, y'know, games built for certain settings and tones...

But maybe, juuuuust maybe, it'll be a 'gateway drug'? I dunno. This is weird.

Is it just me, or is the state of screen widgets on android just getting *worse*?

More screen real estate demanded for fewer features and a shittier layout. Yeah. Nah, your widget just gets evicted entirely and now I have Shodan looking at me.

She's still annoyed I'm unlocking my phone by booping her.

I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that my desktop is a cat.

If I want it to boot in wayland? No, fuck you, fails to kick up.

Sometimes? It just boots in wayland. No problem. Not an issue.

I can't figure out what the difference is between these two situations. I'm sure the explanation lies somewhere in the logs, but right now, I think the key is to ensure I don't want it to kick up wayland, thus ensuring that it does.

There's no rhyme or reason otherwise.

I got a steam controller in the initial wave. (I hit the 'next step' button on the purchase screen a *lot.*)

Handles great. Fantastic responsivity. My use case is with my and my partner's decks on the TV, so the USB connectivity is a great thing tbh.

And I learned today it Wilhelm Screams if you drop it.

10/10, Valve.

I'm not sure what it says that as more and more video games come out, graphics tech improves, et cetera...

I just want to run more tabletop games.

Managed to get my Steam Controller order in, juuuuust under the wire, judging by when it went out of stock.

That's going on the TV dock. :D

I maintain that, from the perspective of a SOC analyst, the difference between an admin doing admin things and an adversary doing adversary things....

Is often just a ticket number.

Swapping a charger between two laptops whenever one gets low feels like one of those scenes where two people have to share the same oxygen tank to stay alive, passing it back and forth between each other.

Yes, I could plug in another power brick, but this is not the point.

New Ravenloft book for the TTRPG crew: https://www.dungeonsanddragons.com/ravenloft/

Color tarokka deck, a few new subclasses. (Reanimator artificer. Is this the first time they've officially published an artificer thingy outside of the book with artificer?)

Hoping the rest isn't a rehash. Ravenloft is like... one of their biggest things (Curse of Strahd is a huge thing for folks) and messing it up would be... not great.

(Still mad about what happened with Spelljammer.)

I enjoy writing as a hobby, but getting a portable thing to write on that isn't my phone is... a concern.

Every time I go to look at a dedicated writing device (think like a freewrite) I'll admit, I boggle, hard. They're all *incredibly* expensive. That freewrite I mentioned? Like $550.

I can get 8 gigs of RAM and one of those stupid RGB spacers for that.

Part of me wants to work up some kinda cyberdeck-y writing machine using a Pi Zero W 2, an e-ink screen, and a decent keyboard. At that point, though, I may as well take a thinkpad or a basic chromebook (with linux on it, because to hell w/ chromeos) and use that...

EDIT: Okay, I guess the idea of making my own writing device isn't exactly unique.
