I signed up to Notion just before they went Full AI and the simple and reliable tool I used now feels a little bit more glitchy every day. GitHub has gone downhill in reliability since MS took over it, and that's accelerated as they've gone full-AI. The endlessly memed uptime graph makes this very clear. GitLab seems to have had a not insignificant downshift in quality since they started pushing their AI stack to the point where I'm seriously considering recommending we run our own forge. (Sore point at the moment is a bug I can reproduce in their CI tooling has basically been ignored, and they've pushed several breaking bugs to their CI stack which have caused us a lot of grief.) Atlassian in general, but Jira and Confluence specifically are glitchier every day. (Try selecting rich text with your keyboard) Slack seems to lack that polish it had a couple of years ago. and there's nothing I can point to and say "this is the problem", but these solid, dependable apps seem less solid, less dependable, more glitchy, and more unreliable every day.

@altomare@oldbytes.space That silver knob on the front of the body should be the stitch length control. I have two 99s from the 1950s and they're beautiful machines, I'm currently sewing shirts on the newer of the two and it's so much nicer to sew with than any of the other significantly more modern machines we have. I was lucky enough to get both machines in working order and our local sewing machine repair place services them.

@mjg59@nondeterministic.computer It'll inevitably choose to have weird hardware issues at any time it's inconvenient. Work gets busy then that marginal stick of RAM that never quite caused enough problems to actually fully diagnose goes full-broken and your server starts corrupting disks...

@decryption That is both out of my price range and much more server than I can legitimately use. (TBH a HPE DL380 with 16 2.5" slots is more aspirational than practical) So ideas for fun stuff, assuming you have space and power to run it at home: If you have a NAS, migrating it onto one of them will probably be the last significant hardware upgrade you do. Beyond that, a Syncthing (or some other backup or quasi-backup software that doesn't need a public IP) node for family and friends would be a good usage of one of them. If you want to homelab, these would probably be more homelab than you'd ever need for the next few years. (Also, for selling them, if you split the RAM between them, they'll probably be more attractive.)

@gloriouscow@oldbytes.space I feel much the same way, but I don't feel I need to take a break at this time. Part of this is that I perceive the endless (and somewhat pointless) anti-AI posts are a reaction to AI being thrust upon people against their wishes. "Screaming into the void" in a way. The other part of this is potentially a little "herd signalling", saying loudly and proudly that they're part of the anti-AI herd and feeling community about that. In my particular situation, it's pleasing to see that I'm not alone in my feelings about this, as I'm pretty much the lone AI Luddite in an office of people pushing LLMs. And as much as I've made my bed and will lie in it, it is pleasing to know that I'm not the only one out there in a similar situation.
