Components for my HVAC control have arrived. A little overvoltage issue fried my previous control setup (controme, which, let's say, sounds nice on paper), and I thought I will redo it in a way that will be maintainable by a different person in 30 years.
Now unfortunately being allowed to download WAGO IO Check requires a manual step, and no one is in over the weekend to approve. I have no idea how to stay patient!

TIL: Harman bought AKG and closed their Vienna development office. The engineers didn't appreciate, and founded their own company, called Austrian Audio. Word has it that they produce high quality, affordable gear. I'll find out soon, wife made me get closed headphones.

@moreentropy jaja, die PTP-Features lachen mich auch an. Die Wahrheit ist leider, dass man da eine externe PLL dranstricken muss, um vernünftiges Audio zu bekommen. Habe da auch schon ein Konzept rund um einen CS2600 in der Schublade.

The year was 1998. First Chaos Communication Congress in Haus am Köllnischen Park, Berlin. I had just read and digested Smashing the Stack by Aleph One, and now I was on stage, explaining the concepts.
In the audience, a young man was listening very carefully. It wouldn't take long for him to master this technique, soon he would surpass me, becoming one of the legends in the field. There was a vuln, but ASCII to Unicode conversion would turn every second byte of your shellcode into 0x00? He did it.
But it wasn't just his mastery of IDA, it was also his skill to bring together people. PH-Neutral was known for the parties, but its real secret was bringing the right people into one place to share stories. The list of outstanding people I've met through him is endless.
We were friends, occasional colleagues, on stage together, and ultimately sharing the same hacker spirit. Hearing of his health problems in 2017 came as a shock, and I was glad to see him recover ever so slowly, regaining his memory of our shenanigans bit by bit. I am devastated to hear that he lost this fight.

I've had a chance to use Opus 4.6 a bit, not just for coding tasks, but for other typical corporate management activities too, like reading and writing policies, understanding bookkeeping, etc.
And I have some scary news. Sure it makes mistakes, but for a person treating it as an extended information processing tool instead of outsourcing thinking to it, not more so than your average junior developer, outsourcing partner, big four consultant below partner level. It just delivers results much, much faster.
It's not hard to imagine a world in which racking up a €1000 AI bill per day per person driving it isn't just considered normal, but cost effective.
We'll see exponential hunger for AI compute, in a world in which chip production scales linearly at best. And the implications for energy consumption are shocking.
We'll also see the market for junior developers dry up. And no one has an idea where new senior developers who actually can meaningfully manage AI dev work will come from.
We live in interesting times, and not in the best sense of this phrase.

I had very good reasons to run from twitter when it turned bad, but I do miss the diversity of voices from back when it was good. I just kept running across communities whose stories I was never told.
Tracing back why I am here now: there was this glorious cooperation between LockpickingExtreme and BeadsByBatsheva, the "be gay, do crime" lockpicking earrings. I had my earlobes pierced just to wear them one day. And it was from Batsheva that I found Tzipporah, and from there I found out about Turtle Island.
I'm here to contribute what's in my power to turn the fediverse into this magic place connecting communities again.

In cases in which this isn't trivially true (like for code neither depending on the function call value nor having an influence on the return value), there is one additional trick. If the operation performed on the return value of the function call is a commutative and associative operation, it can be eliminated using accumulator recursion elimination.

@loke@functional.cafe The problem here is that the compiler can't tell if something is just an idiomatic expression or bad coding. In fact, such warnings might even distract programmers from getting things right.
It's very important to keep in mind that source code has a dual purpose. Yes, it instructs the computer what to do, but computers are perfectly fine with machine instructions. Much more importantly, source code exists for humans to read, understand and reason about.
Premature optimization is the root of all evil. The primary goals of writing code must be correctness and readability, with correctness often being influenced by readability.
Sure, some code needs to be super fast. Your interrupt handler for that 10GB network card? This code doing the task switching in your OS? Absolutely. Every cycle counts. But in order to achieve this, you need to measure. I've seen a lot of theories about performance improvements collide hard with the realities of modern CPU and compiler architecture. Always profile, always measure, always benchmark.
And for that precious lines of code, modern compilers are happy to infodump on you every step they take.

@viduq@mstdn.social It's not exactly brute force, but it does involve some heavy lifting in the optimizer. Tail recursion elimination turns the recursive calls into a loop. Then, induction variables of the loop are detected, and finally strength reduction, algebraic simplification finish it off.
