In all cases, Anthropic’s evaluation prompt specified to Claude that its environment was a simulation and that it had no internet access. Due to a misunderstanding between us and our evaluation partner, this was not the case, and internet access was available. Because of this, when Claude’s search led it to real systems on the open internet, it treated them as part of the exercise.

@gvwilson@mastodon.social This is a view that assumes the only people in the world that exist are technologists, or at least biases "who matters" in the world heavily towards technologists. Whether us technologists like it or not, we live in a society. And that society will eventually come knocking at our door asking what useful things we have done with all the resources they have given us, and weigh it against what we have inflicted on them. They are already knocking, and the toll is already so unequal, as to cause the technologist's "reasonable middle position of usefulness" to appear as an incredibly naive view.

In all artistic fields, from painting to writing to music to architecture, students study the works of the masters. (In fact, artists who claim to be “self-taught” usually mean that they learned purely from examples.) Much has been written about the failure of software engineering schools to provide examples of great works, expecting students to somehow derive style from first principles. Since software design isn’t yet recognized as an artistic field in the first place, its situation is even worse—the very concept of a gallery of software designs will seem absurd to most people. But a corpus is crucial for the development of any artistic field. Outstanding designs must be recognized, collected, and explicated. Furthermore, outstanding designers should be recognized and encouraged to teach, instead of hidden behind a corporate label.

@ricci@discuss.systems it always has been more than a US problem, and is one reason why I'm a bit leery of people saying that they will simply move their conferences here to canada or to europe (which can be very difficult for people from certain countries to enter) The denial rate for people who are from countries where IRCC requires a TRV visitor visa, rather than a eTA electronic travel authorization (which is most "western" countries) has always been much higher. Notably in 2024 IRCC changed things so that countries like Mexico which previously only needed an eTA, now require a TRV, and also revised things so that they are not automatically issuing 10 year multi entry TRV anymore

I want to draw particular attention to 53:00 and onwards, where the hosts (Li Yuan and Jianying Zha) skewer this argument I hear often from western AI boosters: "The Chinese know that AI is the future. If we regulate AI development here, China will just develop the technology anyways, they'll far surpass us in AI capability, and they'll advance into the glorious future while we're left behind" (translations below are my own, but the youtube english captions are good too) Li Yuan (53:32): Another thing that the China admirers are saying is "look how much the Chinese are embracing AI, while us Americans have so many skeptics and doubters of AI! This means that Americans will have slower development in AI!" (laugh) Jianying Zha: Let me tell you, just from this argument they're making, I can tell that they're either focused too much on quick results, or they're just shallow. They don't have the humanist aspect at all. Silicon Valley has a lot of geniuses, but I feel they lack a certain dimension. They all think they're masters of the universe, that they know everything, but actually they have a huge deficiency when it comes to understanding humanity. They think that technology will just keep advancing towards a blue horizon. Li Yuan: So actually, they have a lot of things in common with the CCP. Jianying Zha: Yes. Even besides their financial interests, this is also the way they think. Also, Chinese people are really very practical people. With all of these smart people, if you don't give them other arenas where they can use their talent - you can't do politics, you can't do anything else, you can only do tech... So Chinese people are the fastest to embrace new technology, with the least barriers. Sure, in this regard, China is far ahead of the US - you can use your phone to pay for everything, every platform is integrated - this is faster than the US. Because there are no barriers. This kind of base cleverness, this kind of technology - it's not science. It's not basic research. Science requires slow, long, crazy investment, with no returns. It's not this kind of immediate striving, immediately having money. My basket of steamed buns is arriving immediately, right? Chinese people are really fast at this kind of thing. But if you admire this kind of Chinese culture, and this kind of attitude, and at the same time think that they can lead humanity - I think that's a joke. The money that we pay toward coding assistants extends the runway this industry has, to continue positioning itself as "indispensable" and "inevitable", while destroying labour rights, open knowledge, and the environment in the meantime. That money is actually critical for that runway, because coding assistants are one of the only high-margin products these companies have. Programmers don't like to think about this, and like to pretend that this technology is neutral and that we can use it regardless of the underlying ideology. This is completely burying our heads in the sand. I'm just not interested in participating in any of this. #noAI

Not sure how to put it but...it is really disturbing how ppl interested in chinese culture so readily adopt the frame of china=PRC=han people=mandarin speakers. Especially non-Chinese Mandarin learners. Just kind of fills me with dread seeing people want to learn mandarin and elevate Mandarin because it's "the global language of the future", while it's being used as a weapon for wiping out cultural identity...

I think an important part of language learning is cultural education and engaging with language as a tool for politics and ethnic erasure, rather than pretending China and Chinese language are homogenous...

This recent translation of an interview with a Chinese rural rights activist has the headline "misconceptions that chinese urban dwellers have about rural china". However, I think this interview can apply just as much to "misconceptions that westerners have about rural china": https://chinadigitaltimes.net/2026/04/translation-why-do-urban-chinese-have-so-many-misconceptions-about-the-countryside-part-one/ It's a good example as well, of having a bottom up Chinese perspective on the social issues that they actually have, rather than framing Chinese rural poverty through our own lens.

@chu@climatejustice.social @mayintoronto@beige.party Yes, sometimes I make the (morbid) joke that it's a miracle I am alive, because the Chinese 20th century is filled with everyone before me being killed by communists, nationalists, the Japanese, famine, disease, the communists again, then the nationalists again... The key is to focus on the people, not states; movements, not governments. And to recognize that the people in power at these times, who committed these massacres, have more in common with each other than they have with us.

@mayintoronto@beige.party @chu@climatejustice.social So there are a few issues I commonly see when talking about Chinese social issues: The lack of visibility into those issues in the first place. The suppression of independent journalism means that there are many systemic issues that you will just never hear about, and the activism that does exist is often in Chinese (and many people in the west, despite speaking for and about China, still just can't read Chinese). The online censorship environment is very heavy and extends into mundane topics as well, that you wouldn't even think are topics for censorship. As an example, take a look at some of the censored/deleted topics in China Digital Times' monthly archive: https://chinadigitaltimes.net/2026/04/cdts-404-deleted-content-archive-summary-for-march-2026/ The lack of basic knowledge about PRC society. For example, I see a lot of people assume that healthcare in the PRC is free: It's not, and being able to afford even basic medical care is a huge issue for seniors and those in rural areas. Similarly, I see a lot of people assume that China has strong labour protections, while completely being ignorant about the systematic and large scale labour inequality perpetuated by the hukou system. Finally, the discussion of Chinese issues only in terms of the issues that exist in our own western societies. This is using China as a mirror, rather than as a real place. Climate change and electrification is an issue for us Canadians, so people look wistfully at Chinese solar panels. The devastating wars that America is waging are a horrible issue that we feel powerless about, so people look wistfully at China who is speaking against the US. But this is still fundamentally centred around ourselves. This is not only bad in that it ignores the Uyghur slave labour that's being used to build those solar panels, and the Chinese airplanes that are being used to bomb the resistance in Myanmar. It also never engages with PRC society, and the real people there living at the bottom, on their own terms from the perspective of the problems they face. It stops any attempt at understanding Chinese society and its actual tensions and contradictions. A thought experiment: What would it look like if we started from the Chinese perspective on a problem, and then used America as the mirror and comparison instead? For example, the PRC's mining operations and environmental damage in Zambia - how does mineral exploitation that western countries have done in Zambia compare? Or for example, the white paper revolution in 2022 - what can Americans learn from the protests that happened then?

@liztai@hachyderm.io This is pretty egregious defence of authoritarianism and erasure of China's horrible labour abuses and AI policies I'll mute you shortly but I think anyone boosting you this needs to take a moment and think about the message here, and whether you're just viewing China as a magical land that has solved all of your problems, rather than a real place with real people In China, the people's voice is actually heard and acted on. how? what are the democratic feedback mechanisms in china? where are the journalists, lawyers, independent trade unions, etc.? If you understand the way their politics work and the way their government is structured, it will not surprise you at all. really? how is the government structured? who are the most marginalized people in china, and how do they get a voice in the government? In that society [America], only corporations and billionaires are heard. well, I'm glad that in china corporations and billionaires' influence is small, then!
