bg picture: an internet pseudo-random number generator (Sōtatsu cat rolling dice).

avatar: a no rickshaws road sign. This is a no rick(shaw)-rolling zone.

I ended up here by working in tech to pay off my student loans. Mostly sysadmin and infosec info on this account. I think I need multiple accounts for all the content I want to explore.

Trying to keep SN ratio high w/o becoming a reply guy. Or maybe this is like my Sent Mail folder so I remember things...

I hate unpredictable automation.

And, unremarkable toots will autodelete.

@nygren@hachyderm.io I always say TLS when I mean TLS 1.2 or higher. If a vendor or customer is using SSL loosely I ask if they mean TLS 1.2 or 1.3. It sets a technical baseline and still allows for talking about older historical usage or when looking for insecure certificates on a network.

This isn't a bad overview of AI risk from a re-insurer (the insurance co for insurance companies). Different AI use cases with real-world examples and case studies. Use this to educate non-technical/non-risk specialist staff. Also has a glossary. @douglasvb@m.ai6yr.org Since datacenters now need to be protected from drones why not repurpose a Nimitz -class carrier for nuclear powered datacenters? The flight deck can be used for anti-drone flights, keep the AA guns, water cooling, ship-to-shore power if needed. Some of the tech is already being evaluated, https://www.stripes.com/branches/navy/2026-01-02/nimitz-nuclear-reactor-data-center-20259929.html

To make up for this, here's a link the RISKS digest post mentioned in the article with the quote from the author of _Disinfectant (68k Mac AV software). https://catless.ncl.ac.uk/Risks/16.55.html#subj3

Optical computing technology continues to advance. Whatever your opinion on LLMs, IMHO you have to understand the technology(s) before criticizing it. I compare this to the time when DSPs and math coprocessors were separate chips.

@nicksilkey@hachyderm.io There's a make everything fit in one response packet recommendation to avoid fragmentation. This doc says 1400 for max payload size. There's no quick rule-of-thumb these days since IPv6 and DNSSEC are variable, see section 5 for recommendations. https://www.ietf.org/archive/id/draft-ietf-dnsop-avoid-fragmentation-07.html
