For the next #IronFox release, we intend to remove built-in DNS over HTTPS providers that do not have their addresses signed with DNSSEC and/or do not enforce DNSSEC for domains that support it. We're making this change because we believe it's our responsibility to hold the default selection of providers to the highest possible standards, and due to the improvement in privacy and security that it will provide for users.

The following providers will be impacted:

- AdGuard
- AdGuard (Unfiltered)
- NextDNS
- Quad9
- Wikimedia

Unfortunately, as Quad9 is one of the providers impacted, we intend to switch the default provider for new users to Mullvad (Base).

If you are currently using any of the effected providers, your choice will be respected, and they will remain your selected DNS provider after updating, though we would strongly recommend switching to one of the other built-in providers if possible.

We wanted to share this announcement before release to make users aware and get feedback around this change. We look forward to hearing what the community thinks!

@switchingsoftware@fedifreu.de Firefox’s implementation of Safe Browsing is FOSS and privacy-respecting. We take additional measures to further improve its privacy, by proxying connections as part of it to avoid directly connecting to/exposing IP addresses to Google, as well as disabling the submission of file metadata to Google. We also have a UI setting to enable/disable Safe Browsing, and we added an option to control it on the onboarding as well, so that users are aware and can easily enable/disable it if desired. For more details on our implementation, see our documentation here: https://gitlab.com/ironfox-oss/IronFox/-/blob/v146.0/docs/Safe-Browsing.md It’s deeply unfortunate that there isn’t yet a viable alternative to Safe Browsing - relying on Google at all is obviously far from ideal (maybe this is up the alley of someone like @quad9dns@mastodon.social?? please make it happen 🙏). But, in the meantime we take the necessary measures to protect the privacy of users, while of course ensuring you’re always in control and have the ability to enable or disable it to your liking.

For the last few months, #Google has been blocking Safe Browsing requests via our (#IronFox) API key. They claim this is due to us hitting their (very limited) usage quotas.

We've filled out their form to request additional quota several times, and have never heard a response back.

Does anyone have any ideas/thoughts/suggestions on how we can get this fixed? Any help/support would be greatly appreciated. It's becoming a major issue that's compromising the safety of our users (by leaving them more exposed to malware/phishing/etc).

@nachthemd@norden.social it’s definitely a step in the right direction. content process isolation here leverages android’s isolatedProcess (which is functionally provided by/enforced by the OS itself) to confine and ensure that content processes run with the least privileges possible. this is similar to what chromium has been using for quite some time. so IMO it is a fairly major security improvement, and like we did with fission, we’re the first gecko browser on mobile to support and enable it.

@abucci since the firefox ai runtime (/ml component) was implemented in gecko directly, you're right that it's technically present on android - but it's not actively being used/implemented anywhere in geckoview and fenix (firefox for android) itself - unlike firefox for desktop, which has been adding user-facing features like ai chatbot integration, link preview, smart tab grouping, etc. (with a separate "genai" component).

but, i took a look, and i will go ahead and disable extensions.ml.enabled for next release, thanks for pointing it out.

in general, i'm going to take a closer look into the ai runtime/ml component (that we're inheriting from gecko) for next release, and see what specifically we can disable/remove. i don't think we want to kill all local "machine learning" functionality (ex. firefox translations technically uses machine learning models - and we def want to support that), but we def don't won't support anything related to "generative" ai, like the examples i mentioned of firefox's recent features on desktop

(Thankfully, Mozilla’s “generative AI” features haven’t really made their way to Android, so this hasn’t yet been an issue for us - but this is how we will proceed if/when they are introduced).
