So my very dear and old BBS /#IRC era friends were talking about #LLM assisted coding tools, pros and cons this comment got made. Including the whole thing for context but what struck me was the last two set of lines.
“I like what it can do well, like finding vaguely where a bug is likely to be or summarizing the context around some code. Automatically writing small scripts and config files for things. Being a second set of eyes on changes. Something to bounce design idea off.”
And i recall in the 90s early 2000s how when we were on IRC all the time, when we were learning and developing our various skillsets( programming, network skills , things to make the internet “go”) , we would share and ask for help all the time, we were that group where we could be the second set of eyes, someone to bounce ideas off of and in the end we would all learn something more from one persons desire to learn something.
In a time where we are more connected and always online more than ever before, we find ourselves so disconnected and without the time to communicate with our friends that we find it easier to check with an LLM than each other.
I miss learning with my friends.

A broken man on a #Halifax pier. Just some wannabe, suppose I could do better. Middled aged Canadian, child of immigrants who can't relate to them. Attempting every day to be a good person to all walks of folks and life. I don't always succeed. Love all things computer related, admirer of engineers professional and amateurs especially. Hoping your motivation rubs off on me.

This feels like something out of @GreatDismal@mastodon.social ’s Sprawl “universe” where if it wasn’t from China , it was shit gear , or using the latest “russian” decryption algorithm, etc etc.
Although i really wanna see some cyber gear tagged as being made in Scotland so it can get the tagline, “If it’s not Scottish, it’s crrrraappp”!
🤣

Quoting
AI news is exhausting.
Huggingface : We tried to defend ourselves, but guardrails prevented us due to "cyber". So we used a Chinese model
(Gee, who could have predicted this? 😂)
OpenAI: Our models are so powerful, the world isn't ready for them yet
(Wink to venture capitalists and government contract makers. 😉)
I want off of this ride.

@tinker@infosec.exchange Bittorent protection from the MPAA and RIA , really is the biggest thought but then also DNS meta data Though i use Adgaurd i should run my own resolver , which is fine at home but how does that help me on my devices while travelling .. this is inspiring me to pick up an old experiment again to see what traffic leaks. not everything (phone apps) use TLS it seems ..

@peter @coreysnipes i’ve been telling this to my neighbours kid in univ, think of the computer and computer skills as a tool like a hammer or a box of tools, something you need to use to make something good and physical. so minor in comp sci, but add something that uses that too to it, medicine(science!), engineering (electrical, chemical) , law (patent laws, lawyers who know how computer works can really do some good in the world), heck even mathematics these days get inspiration and solutions from “solved” comp sci/networking path issues. So comp sci by itself these days is tough unless you’re exceptional , but having that tool to apply to some other work, that’s where it pays off, in my option as someone who has regrets with past life choices like just doing comp sci :)
Update 2:
Oh yeah and AI is never going to make the next great computer architecture, so become someone who can make the next ARM or RiSc or something new, a quantum chip , or clone brain matter as compute (no don’t do that, don’t make a slave race.. )
Update: Oh yeah i kinda wanna be a farmer now too and i know how tough and thankless that job is, but nevertheless..

This is such a good thread, but of all the replies and quote toots, no one has mentioned #coreboot #libreboot
Of course there are very old and limited number of boards that can run these, and i'm wondering if this could give a boost to more boards being supported.

@glyph@mastodon.social @mcc@mastodon.social @0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange but “making money” these days is not about direct income but share value as the C-level highest priority is to protect and increase shareholder value. So even if they break even by our income but the value of the share is like 1000 percent of its actual value, they see it as “making money”. imo

I hate work. it’s not fun.. when i was at TenB at least if the work was tedious or difficult there was good coworkers to chat with and share the pain and that made it bearable (pre -ipo of course). same with other places.. but this place how has it functioned for so long ???
like zero motivation ..

@lattera@bsd.network depends on what you’re eating. More veg/fiber and meat/proteins? smaller portions more often? those are definitely weight loss techniques.
I wish i had that problem , im going the other way but i snack too much on carbs and still eat a “regular” sized meal which has too much carb for me:)
