@MLE_online@social.afront.org I no longer feel any animosity towards it, but it would still feel weird for me to use. In my flavour of Northern Californian accent, it sounds very distinct from the rest of my vocabularly. To my ear it feels like it comes from AAVE and my white ass shouldn't be saying it. I looked it up just now, and it seems linquists aren't quite 100% sure it's AAVE, but they're willing to bet that it started in AAVE.

Sometimes I tell people "don't worry, I've got a handle on things, well except on thet plunger" and whip out the wooden handle that came with the plunger

@netopwibby@social.coop Your paint job looks fantastic! I have a different revision of the same keyboard. I disassembled and cleaned it up once and have some photos buried on backup. If you really need a reference photo or just have a question, feel free to ask. I got lucky and didn't have to disassemble any keyswitches or do any soldering, so I can't speak to that outside of general soldering advice. Best of luck with the switch replacement!

@ethan256@mas.to Most OOP languages aren't used much in webdev. JS is definitely the tool to know there. I would recommend Python, because it is handy both for quickly spinning up prototypical back-end stuff and also for building some more serious infrastructure. It also has a very forgiving error system that makes quickly learning more abstract concepts easier. You can pivot into a lot of other niches and just quickly solve small, one-off problems with Python. I haven't used Typescript enough to speak on it with expertise, but I hear it's good. @ethan256@mas.to Greetings from California! I think my first more serious use of JS was in my university senior project. We had a robot autonomously mapping and navigating through a room and using a camera to recognize objects as it went. The idea was that it was a proof-of-concept for an accessibilty aid to help blind people locate and retrieve dropped objects. I used JS to do final filtering to select good object identifications before listing out every object the robot saw in the UI. In the end, the JS was short and simple, but the learning curve of getting it to play nice with the robotics software was steep. At that point in my education, I was near the end of university, so learning another language on top of the many I had already dabbled in wasn't bad, but was certainly more stressful on a deadline. Nowadays I only use it when occasionally updating or making browser extensions. JS is hard for reasons that can be subtle and difficult to descibe. Many aspects of it are unforgiving. If you have the luxury of time to learn an object oriented language after JS, I would recommend giving it a go. It gets easier to pick up new languages as you grow more familiar with popular design patterns. Imo, many other OOP languages are better at communicating with the dev than JS and make troubleshooting easier.

@ethan256@mas.to I got a BS in computer engineering but wound up doing mostly web maintenance professionally. I've never really spent time to really learn JS, even though I've used it on occasion. Lately, I've been building a little compiler for a really simple and trimmed down python-like syntax just for fun and to keep skills sharp.

@faithisleaping@anarres.family Interesting, I've always found watches oddly affirming, because outside of certain professional fields, nobody around here questions if you wear a "women's" or a "men's" watch. one of the nice things about watches turning into a "men's thing" in the past 40ish years is that there's now a bajillion women's watches on the used market, so you can get weird stuff relatively cheaply. I hope you enjoy your watch and have a peaceful day!

I was going with history and bookmarks, cuz crawling is harder since the AI nonsense, even when you're doing it politely, and my rural internet is sloooww.

We might be less likely to accept many computer-related donations, but we literally have a "then and now" display with all the analog things that got replaced with smartphones. There's certainly room for something somewhere, even better if you show the museum staff how to use it and demo it to kids

@brett I've had a 5% drop off in stuff blocked lately, but that might just be cuz I haven't updated gravity super recently. When viewing websites, I haven't had noticeable issues. Most of what I block appears to be calls to cdn subdomains which is sorta new. It used to be that the ad-tech subdomains were very noticeably different. Ublock is by far the most effective tool I have, but pi-hole still seems effective enough to keep around.

@crowgirl@hachyderm.io Ive been there before but didn't have encryption to contend with. Take a breath. It'll be ok, one step at a time. I'll second all the people suggesting to make a backup with dd or whatever. You can't go wrong making a backup as long as you're comfortable with the tools you're using to create it. I dont know your level of experience, so I'm gonna throw some questions and suggestions at the metaphorical wall to see what sticks. Feel free to ask questions or disregard if Im just not helpful. We'll start easy, what do you see when you turn on the computer? BIOS splash? OS loading screen? Login screen? If it's just desktop and graphics drivers that are screwed up, you might see nothing, just black, or maybe a login screen that just doesn't work. Press Ctrl-Alt and any one of the F keys. This should take you to a terminal only interface where you can log in. Usually F7 is the default for a normal desktop, but that varies depending on distro.

@alice_watson @alice I just had a thought, I should make a browser extension that modifies all my cookies to have garbage data. If they wanna give me garbage, why not give some back? If I feel like getting real fancy, I could carefully feed some false, but plausible data to poison their dataset.
