I appreciate the thorough replies from both you and @OurToothbrush@lemmy.ml I guess the gist is that on paper the Kims are not the absolute ruling family in the DPRK. It just seems that way from the outside due to the veneration they have among their people. Every western power really does seem to think Kim Jong Un is fully the head of state there. So its hard to not think the truth is somewhere in between. Even if they really are legitimately elected. The whole concept of a family lineage of power makes me uncomfortable. I feel the same way about the Kennedys, Bushs, Clintons, etc.

I'm willing to be open minded that a lot of shit I have heard about the DPRK is tainted by, or is straight up western propaganda. But is the hereditary dictatorship (essentially an absolute monarchy) in the DPRK one of the "some problems?" Or is there a .ML justification for it? It really seems like a major problem that is incompatible with the goals and ideals of communism to me.

What we really need is an alternative to the the original functionality of Facebook. Staying connected with real life friends, family, and acquaintances. Social event planning, sharing life photos, sharing life updates, hell even marketplace. All the federated "alternatives" are basically twitter clones, which really is a very different thing at its core. I do not want to share family photos and life updates with the whole fucking planet. Just the 500ish people I "know" in real life. I also don't want to see tweet like mastodon posts in my friend feed. Its a different thing. I know friendica is supposed to be that, but in my experience, its slow as hell, and just feels like a weird overlay on mastodon.

The reality is none of this insanity has directly effected me. So day to day life, working, raising kids, etc. is completely normal for me. However, keeping up with news. Feeling empathy for people being effected now, and worrying about when the other shoe is going to drop on me and my family stresses me out. I don't like being stressed out and avoid stress as much as possible, so I find myself just trying to stay distracted with hobbies, video games, etc. Then I feel guilty about distracting myself. If I can't do much about the situation, I should at least inform myself about it. But then there comes the stress again... So yeah, in a way add me to the crashing out list I guess.

Of course I do. The only reason not to is if you are showering with someone else. A friend in college got in a huge fight with his girlfriend when he peed on her feet in the shower.

I think its a better than nothing kind of option for some families living in remote places or living very itinerant lifestyles But in general, I think its just a way to for parents to keep their kids as indoctrinated into their fucked up beliefs as they can. Also, growing up I knew many homeschooled kids through boyscouts, and they were almost always socially stunted, and often intellectually behind because their parents were barely teaching them anything.

Can you just plug a USB HDD into that old Mac and copy the files over using that?

Not all software available on Linux is open source. NVIDIA drivers for example. Hell, most of the games on Steam are closed source. So, is it just a matter of principle on Valve and AMD’s part that they only want to ship with fully open source drivers? I’m not technically knowledgeable enough to understand why you can’t just make the HDMI 2.1 part of the driver code closed source and the rest of the graphics drivers open?
