So this morning I took Pez for a walk before we continued our slow cruise to Earith. In half an hour he managed to pickup ~200 cleaver seeds. Possibly a new personal best for the velcro dog! #dogsofmastodon #boatlife

@Sarah111well@mas.to we were told we'd win the case against our boat builder, and then he'd just declare himself bankrupt, so we'd face all the costs and have nothing to show for it. My wife (Natalie) has rebuilt most of it from scratch, and now swears by woman tradespeople (and I have to agree)!

@Sarah111well@mas.to the lack of quality tradespeople and a totally ineffective regulator is one of the lessons we've learned the hard way. Protection from shoddy work is a privilege of the rich ehi can afford the best and lawyers to sue people who rip them off.

Sometimes I'm struck by the extent to which our society pushes responsibility down to the lowest possible level, to the people who have the least power. Take security compliance, where crappy code and product design, or crappy implementation by companies and service providers lead to flaws which can be used to gain unauthorized access to systems and data. 1/2

An old friend of ours wished us a happy anniversary this morning, and said "its almost as hot as your wedding day today". We got married in 2010 and it was 24 degrees celcius. I've just heard someone *seriously* suggest that if a scanner finds a vulnerability in (for example) Microsoft Teams, even if there is no fix available from the vendor (Microsoft) we should patch the component with the latest file version from the upstream provider (often open source maintainers). Bear in mind where this is a file version detection, there's no evidence that its actually exploitable (e.g. the impacted functionality may not even be used by the parent product). For someone in Information Security to suggest this seems absolutely bananas, but am I missing something? #vulnerability #vulnerabilitymanagement #compliancetheater #cyberessentials

@afewbugs@social.coop I really wish we could also connect the dots in aircon being most needed in the summer when its hit and sunny and you could probably power a lot (if not all of it) with solar! We used 15kW power per day last running the aircon in our boat, every watt provided by the sun, zero emissions.

They were both wrong, but the BBC was (on average) closer. Temperature at a local weather station was 34.5, 30.9 and 34.5 across these three days. Temperature peaked at 36.2 on Friday 26th. So glad the Met Office was wrong. Another hot week coming week after next, but 'only' 30-31 Celsius. #heatwave #climatechange

@nicol@social.coop difficult to treat, easier to prevent. Food waste can't get maggots unless flies have time to land on it and lay eggs. Making sure food goes straight in the food waste bin and the lid stays shut should stop it recurring.

Amongst the absolute shitshow of (waves hands) everything right now three things are making me less miserable today.

My amazing wife who's baffling through all the barriers life can throw at you to organise a repair cafe so people can keep what they love, spend less money and reduce what goes to landfill.
The England football fan who came up with a chant which might get them thrown out of stadiums. Thank you for putting into terrace verse what most people think.

Eventually I found out what these values are. They are: democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Not sure how arresting me if I have "I support Palestine Action. I oppose genocide" on a piece of cardboard lives up to the values of individual liberty or respecting those with different beliefs, but maybe I've misunderstood.

I keep hearing a lot about 'British Values', and as someone born and educated in Britain I'm not entirely sure what those values are, or who gets to decide what they are. I went to our governments website to find out, and it appears British Values are comma separated. Glad I cleared that up. #british #culture
