@jerry@infosec.exchange @AG100pct@infosec.exchange this is a a multi layer issue: there is the ability of the project to punish an update quickly, with adequate documentation for a seamless upgrade; and there’s the ability of each instance to apply said update in a timely manner, and possibly apply any cleanup afterward
But really, that is exactly what self-hosting means, no surprise there?
At least there aren’t many plugins to contend with, like with WordPress for example

@wez@social.treehouse.systems I read about someone asking their bot how it managed to write in a system directory supposedly out of its sandbox and the bot essentially responded, well, I ran a docker image with a mounted volume and that gave me write access wherever I wanted
Because indeed, docker doesn’t have the same permissions as the bot

Ohhhhh so I rediscovered this page in the companion app to my battery, where they attempt to summarize the energy in, out, etc over the lifetime of this product while in my care
It seems that I have avoided drawing 127 kWh from the grid so far (1 year-ish)
That’s a grand saving of… €19!
(This is a €600 product that will probably not last another 5 years)
To be fair, I knew this going in. It wasn’t an investment to save money but to learn about my house and my usage patterns.

This isn’t one of the models that they call high temperature (counter intuitively) that can operate efficiently at really low outside temps
This model can work until -5°C or so, but
it draws more and more energy (I’ve seen 120 kWh days)it has to rely on another heating system to supplement itself on the worst days
Outside of extreme days, it’s great

Anecdotally, I found that compost seems to act basically as a heat pump: it’s much colder below and there is condensation
… which would tend to show that it does in fact not help nearby plants that much? There’s probably an inner layer that gets colder and an outer layer that gets the nutrients?

While trying to better understand my usage patterns today, I did some experimentation with the little box that my electricity utility installed at my place
(it has buttons and a screen and I can see how much estimated energy the house is consuming at any given time)
Why does my vitro ceramic stuff draw 25W constantly? And the oven, same amount while also doing nothing at all? There is only a clock display that serves no purpose.
All together, that’s over 1 kWh per day; for comparison, if I were to use the oven to heat something up for 10 minutes, I’d be using about half as much energy
25W is what my internet box draws too, which I also find outrageous btw —but at least that one gets constant use
Who builds these things 🤷♀️
